Adjectives Too Much

“Through not spending enough we spend too much” - Spanish Proverb

The same rules you learned for verbs apply to adjectives as well, though you may not necessarily know how to change adjectives to stem form.

adj.stem + すぎる

The stem form for adjectives (both な and い) are as follows:

しずかな → しずか

たかい → たか

I think they pretty much line up with what you’d expect, so hopefully that helps you to remember them. For な, you just drop the な to get to stem form. For い, just drop the い. It’s right in the name of both of these adjectives, in fact (what you drop)!

Here are some more examples of this:

べんりな → べんりすぎる (too convenient)

しずかな → しずかすぎる (too quiet)

たかい → たかすぎる (too tall/expensive)

おもしろい → おもしろすぎる (too interesting)

At this point I just want you to practice changing the adjectives from their base state to their “too much” state, kind of like what you did with verbs. Here’s a couple of practice ones for this page, and then there’s a worksheet you can go through.

a

aあたたかすぎる (too warm)

a

aうらやましすぎる (too jealous)

a

aいじわるすぎる (too mean)

a

aいかがわしかすぎる (too doubtful)

a

aおもすぎる (too heavy)

a

aあんしんすぎる (too relieved/safe)

a

aおそろしすぎる (too fearful)

a

aいやすぎる (too detestable)

a

aいちじるしすぎる (too remarkable)

The adjective いい doesn’t go down to just い. Like before, it turns into よい, so it would be よすぎる, not いすぎる

Alright, now it’s your turn to go through and convert adjectives (and come up with their すぎる meanings). Download and go through the worksheet, then move on to the next section.

Adjective すぎる Conversion Practice

Now that you have both the conversions of verbs and adjectives under your belt, it’s time to put those things to use!
