たら (If)
“Stay committed to your decisions, but stay flexible in your approach.” - Tom Robbins
There are multiple ways to say “if” in Japanese, but we’re only going to learn about one of them right now. That “way” is たら.
Now, the thing that makes this easier (than if you were just learning this randomly at some random point in your Japanese learning career) is that it’s almost like た-form. In fact, you need to know た-form to use たら. It’s pretty sweet like that.
So, before you move on all you need to know is:
たら = If
Once you know that (you might want to jot it down), move on to the next page. Try to connect たら to た-form as well. Put them next to each other in your brain, if you’re able (just think about both of them, and think about how similar they are with their た’s!). When you’re ready, move on.
By finishing this page, you’ve learned たら, the most important thing you need to know before starting “if たら” form!
