Practice
“Nominalization の”
We have a lot to practice and a lot to do! let’s get started.
Sentences
すき, きらい
In this chapter you learned how to talk about what actions you like and what actions you don’t like. Now I want you to come up with your own. Put them on Lang-8 to get them corrected. I’ll even provide some prompts, though I’d highly encourage you to go outside the prompts as well!
What kinds of foods do you like eating?
What kinds of drinks do you like drinking?
What do you like to do in your free time?
What do you like to read?
What do you like to watch?
Conversely, what things do you not like doing?
Come up with some of your own, and put them up – see what mistakes you made and try to learn from them!
ことができる、ことができない
Now let’s move on to ことができる and ことができない. Come up with sentences expressing what you can do and what you can’t do. I know you’re a pretty hoopy frood and all, but I’m sure there’s one or two things you can’t do, right? Just like before, try to come up with your own prompts as well!
What sports can you do?
What foods can you eat?
What foods can’t you eat?
What can you drink?
What can’t you drink?
Can you swim?
Can you read other languages?
Go through and then submit them to Lang-8. Check your mistakes and then try to learn as much as you can from them!
ことがある
Last but not least is ことがある. You’re probably going to want to stick with the past tense + ことがある (as in, the one that is more like “I’ve done ___ before”), just because you’re talking about yourself, and the other one makes a little less sense in this context. Here are some prompts, but come up with your own, too!
Have you been to any other countries?
Have you seen certain movies?
Have you not seen certain movies?
Have you read certain books?
Have you not read certain books?
Have you eaten something interesting before?
What normal thing have you not eaten before?
Come up with some extras beyond this, and then submit them to Lang-8. As always, learn from those mistakes!
Before You Move On
We covered a lot, but also practice a good amount of things (even if indirectly) that you’ve learned before. This is the last “review” chapter, so now we’re going to start moving to newer concepts again (though it’s never totally new and abstract, right? I wouldn’t do that to yah). So, make sure you’re reviewing and you’re all caught up before moving on!
- Review past kanji, vocab, and radicals. Catch up if you need to!
- Make sure you understand nominalization.
- Make sure you know の and こと.
- Know the broad “rules” about の and こと in terms of which is used when.
- Understand ことがある and ことができる.
Make sure you can say and read all the sentences on the practice page.- Make sure you know your 7-stroke radicals so you’re ready for kanji on the next chapter!
When you’re already to go you should do just that… go!
