で Practice One

“If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange these apples, then you and I still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.” – George Bernard

Let’s take a closer look at the で you just learned. I’m going to provide you with prompts. You have to come up with the rest of the sentence. I’ll give you an example answer, but it’s likely not going to be the same as yours (unless we’re creepily similar to each other, but that would be creepy). First, let’s look at an example.

I slept in a car.

Now it’s your turn. How can you finish the following sentneces? If you’re not sure, stick your answers into Lang-8 and get them checked by native Japanese speakers.

At the restaurant I ate a hamburger.

At the sushi restaurant I ate a lot of sushi.

At college I studied math.

In the kitchen I read a book.

In Japan, I ate sushi.

In America I went to a rodeo.

In France I plan to drink famous wine.

How did you do? Hopefully it was fairly simple to come up with LOCATIONで sentences. We’ll come back around to this in the practice, but for now I want you to move on to the next form of で. It’s similar to this one (all of the で particles have some similarity to this one) so it should only be a little step up for you!

By finishing this page, you should have a better handle on で #1!
