Because から
The main goal of this practice is to get you to the point where you’re able to distinguish between (and then use) all of the different からs you’ve just learned, including “from から” of the previous chapter.
Go ahead and try to translate the following sentences into Japanese. If you don’t know certain words, try to translate it using different words (as few as possible, though). The main purpose of this exercise is to understand the grammar, so you should always attempt to do that, even if the words trip you up (be sure to learn the words as well).
After the game is over I will eat.
a ゲームがおわってから食べます。
Because I’m a cat, I ran away from the dog.
a ねこだから犬からにげた。
Because it’s expensive I didn’t buy it.
a 高いから買わなかった。
From tomorrow I plan to eat vegetables.
a 明日からやさいを食べるつもりです。
Because I don’t like sushi, I do not eat sushi.
a すしが好きじゃないからすしは食べません。
Because my dad is Japanese, I am studying Japanese
a お父さんは日本人だから日本
Because I will go to Japan I bought a new jacket
a 日本に行くから新しいジャケットを買いました。
Because it’s interesting!
a おもしろいから!
Because I’m a student.
a 学生だから。
Because I don’t want to die!
a 死にたくないから!
Because (you’ll) die!
a 死ぬから!
Because you’re my friend!
a 私の友達だから!
I’m eating because it’s fun!
a 楽しいから食べているよ!
How do you feel about all of these? Can you recall, right now, the five separate things you learned about から and what they do and how they work? Try to go through everything in your head and see how it goes. Go back and review anything you couldn’t recall on your own.
When you’re ready, you can move on to the next chapter!
