“Giving And Receiving”

Let’s start off by making sure you can actually differentiate between the three items you learned. As a reminder, they are: あげる, くれる, and もらう. Of course, if you don’t remember what these mean go back and reread the previous chapter.

あげる, くれる, or もらう？

I’m going to give you most of a sentence. One part will be missing. Can you guess what that part is? You got it – it’s the あげる, くれる, and もらう portions.

ボビーさんからテレビを…
Someone received a television from Bobby.

もらった。

ジョーさんは私に花を …
Joe gave me a flower.

くれた。

ひろゆきさんは私にジャケットを …
Hiroyuki gave me a jacket / I received a jacket from Hiroyuki.

くれた。

本はボビーさんに …
I didn’t give the book to Bobby.

あげなかった。

母が＿＿＿＿＿鳥です。 …
It’s the bird my mom gave to me.

くれた

兄から …
I will get it from my older brother.

もらう。

ともこさんに …
I’ll give it to Tomoko.

あげる。

How’d you do? 100%? If not, go back and try to figure out why you got something wrong. If you got everything right you’re ready for the next section.

Practiceをくれる？

You’d better! You have no choice – well, actually you do – but don’t fall into the pit of temptation! You should do this practice, for me, and for yourself. I mean, I’m totally giving you this practice so it would be bad manners not to receive it and do it, right?

もらう

To start, I want you to go around your house and find the things that were given to you. When you come across such an item, I want you to do the following:

  1. Who was this given to me by? [name]から
  2. What is the name of this item? What is it called? Run back to your computer if you’re not sure.
  3. Say the whole sentence: _____からこの＿＿＿をもらった。
  4. Now say a longer sentence… Examples:
  1. ３月に＿＿＿からこの＿＿＿＿をもらった。
  2. これは＿＿＿からもらった。
  3. それは＿＿＿からもらった。
  4. Come up with something interesting.

Try to do this with at least five different things then come back for the next section. If you don’t know the name of something come back to your computer, figure it out, and then go back out into the real world (don’t bring a cheat sheet with you, though!).

くれる

Now for something a little different. I want you to ask someone to give you something, but ask them nicely. Basically, you’re going to use くれる to do this.

＿＿＿＿をくれますか？
Will you give me _____?

You don’t have to talk to a real person (what, you crazy?) if you don’t want to, but you should talk out loud, even if you’re talking to your favorite teddy bear. After someone gives you something, be sure to thank them, too.

ありがとうございます！

Do this to 3-5 items, then come back here.

あげる

For the last part of this practice you’re going to give someone something (and sort of narrate it).

Give someone something: ______をあげます！

Now it’s been given! _____ をあげました！

Talk about the whole event: _____さんは私から＿＿＿＿をもらいました！ (___ received a ___ from me!)

How nice of you. Do this with several people (or inanimate objects) before coming back here. Be sure to practice it real quick before going out in the real world, though. Practice will help for when you have to recall all of this from scratch.

One last thing before moving on to the next chapter, though. There’s one “give” that’s super casual that’s common enough to be worth learning. It’s already something you know, too, which makes it even better.
