Making Sounds

“The empty vessel makes the loudest sound.” – William Shakespeare

Let’s take a break from the normal and take a look at something that’s not really done in English (because it’s childish!) but is very common in Japanese. These “things” are words that create “sound symbolism,” aka 擬声語 (ぎせいご) and 擬態語 (gitaigo). Examples of these words in English include “bang” or “moo” or “meow.” They’re words that represent actual sounds… but, they’re words.

In Japanese, these types of words are very commonly used in everyday conversation. For English speakers it’s almost strange how easily they’re thrown into sentences, but if you can learn these you’ll sound much, much more fluent.
