I Tried Studying
“If you want to achieve a high goal, you’re going to have to take some chances.” – Alberto Salazar
I’m going to start by asking you if you tried something. You get to answer “Yes, I tried ______.” We’ll get to negatives in just a second, though I bet you can guess how that works. Here’s an example.
a すしを食べてみた?
Did you try the sushi?
a はい、すしを食べてみた。
Yes, I tried the sushi.
Now your turn. Answer these questions with answers that say “yes, I tried that.”
a パソコンを使ってみた?
Did you try to use the computer?
a ジュースをのんでみた?
Did you try to drink the juice?
a ボールを投げてみた?
Did you try to throw the ball?
a このかんじをよんでみた?
Did you try to read this kanji?
So what if you didn’t try to do some of these things? That’s right, the みる would just switch to みない or みなかった. You learned how to do this when you learned about casual verbs! Now answer the sentences with either positive or negative answers. Just be sure you stay within the correct tense (past or present/future).
a てがみをかいてみた?
Did you try to write a letter?
a 東京に行ってみる?
Will you try to go to Tokyo?
a ケーキを作ってみる?
Will you try to make a cake?
As you can see, the questions and answers and answers are pretty flexible, especially when doing casual speech. Speaking of which, what about the formal version of みる? It’s just as easy as you might expect!
