I started watching a Japanese youtube video where someone was talking about video games- well, actually, I guess it would help if I linked it:

I was watching that youtube video and in the title he uses やった which I thought was probably like やります. So I looked it up and I think it’s an informal past tense of やります? the verb to do? This is a bit beyond my comprehension level anyway to be honest :P I’m on early lesson five and haven’t quite got to the past tense dictionary form bit yet (if that’s what it is?)

But anyway, is it more common to use やります・します when referring to video games than あそびます?

Since あそびます means play, and the other two are ‘to do’ I kind of assumed あそびます/あそぶ would be used, but maybe that’s more for other types of action?

hopefully someone can help me, thanks. :)

Yes, it is the past tense dictionary form of to do. TF will cover this stuff.

I’m not sure what’s common to use when talking about video games (not enough of a gamer!), so can’t help there, sorry.

あそぶ = the act of playing, or enjoying yourself, or having a good time. Playing with friends, say – it’s not used in the sense of “playing a game” or “playing soccer” like it is in English.

As for する versus やる, やる is a little bit more casual.

I suspected that Joel, but wasn’t 100% (I must be the non-gamer learning Japanese!).
