I was wondering if anyone knew about this word.  On both jisho and textfugu (ultimate vocab #6), the definition is listed as “arrogance”.  However the sentence examples as well as the definition/examples on alc.co.jp seem to suggest the definition is “bulk” or “large build”, often when referring to large people.  This definition would also make more sense looking at the kanji meanings.

If you search using the kanji on Jisho, it lists two words that use the same symbols; おおがら for large build, and おおへい for arrogance. Only the former is listed as a na-adjective, which might distinguish it in use…

Hard to find examples of おおへい on ALC though, does anyone know a more common term for something like arrogance? 横柄 is sugested by Jisho, and has a similar reading; おうへい.

Ah, yes I should have tried searching like that on jisho.  Neither is listed on there as a “common word”. Like you say, if you do a search for arrogance it brings up 横柄 (おうへい) which seems to be supported by ALC examples as a better word as well..

There is がんこ as well.. though not exactly the same,  stubbornness and arrogance are pretty closely related.

Yeah, my dictionary has おおがら as the only reading listed for 大柄, and doesn’t have おおへい at all (though the IME does suggest 大柄 as the only available kanji whenever I type it).

Is this a covert attempt to stop us arguing with arrogant people on the net? Or just to confuse them? I reserve my right to call people arrogant, and have changed my flashcard!

Daijirin (J-J), Daijisen (J-J) and Kenkyusha (J-E) dictionaries all say that 大柄 (おおへい) is the same as 横柄.

    [名・形動]「横柄(おうへい)」に同じ。
