I’m just remembering some Japanese TV show I saw where one of the characters was being enigmatic and used “そうですね。” when asked a question and then walked away. So, Does this mean that it can imply all three of it’s meaning at the same time? Can saying .そうですね imply a question? kind of like, Is it so? instead of just confirmation? by using the right inflection on ね does it become mysterious because you can’t tell if they’re confirming, reflecting, or telling you to reflect/think again? Does this work? Is it kind of like saying “if you say so…” in English?
The rough translation of the ね particle is something like “isn’t it?” anyway, so it’s already implying a sort of question of confirmation. With the right sort of inflection, you can manage anything from “don’t you think?” to “you don’t say.” =)
Funny cause I was just simulating a situation like this in my head before I saw this:
Me: 先生、ここ合ってますか？「国内」
先生： Yeah…I couldn’t think of anything else but that. あああ、なるほど・・・・・・
先生：終わったなら、どんどんやってください。宿題だから
Me：あ、 は、はい。そ、そうですよね （苦笑）
