    I found a little ceramic bowl (8cm diameter, 2.5cm deep)in a box of random stuff, with 食物 written at the bottom.

    Is it just a general purpose bit of tableware?

    Probably. 食物 means ‘food’ or ‘foodstuff’ apparently, so I guess it’s for meals and eating at the table.
