My names Jonathan and in Japanese that’s pronounced じょなさん (ジョナサン). Now I’ve just got through the name-enders lesson and just realised that when I say わたしはじょなさんです to a Japanese person’s ear it might sound like I’m elevating myself above them by using the honorific さん. I suppose I could just use the shorter version of my name ジョン but I’m still wondering if I’d be able to use my full name without someone mistakenly thinking I’m called Jonah or something and that I have a very high opinion of myself. I suppose it could lead to some amusing misunderstandings……
I think they will understand, but if it’s that troublesome wear a name tag that says ジョナサン. but really I think they’ll understand as long as you don’t put an emphasis on san, say it quickly not jonaSAN. It’s a common name and they are bound to have heard it, right?

AnonymousIf you really want to use the full name, change さん to ざん pronunciation wise. Otherwise Assume they know enough foreign names to get it, and risk being hated from your first meeting.
