So I’ve heard a lot of people talking about WaniKani, also I saw the link on the TextFugu dashboard for it, but I’m slightly confused.

I made an account and did the first level. I’m curious, what is the difference between paid and free membership? It doesn’t explicitly state this anywhere. I’m also curious what the purpose of the wait between reviews is. (Is this removed if you buy…?)

Also, I’m wondering why the WaniKani forums seem to be more active than TextFugu’s :o. Wanikani is designed as supplimentary, correct? Wouldnt that mean that TextFugu would be more active?

Sorry for these random questions… Just curious :O

The first two levels of WaniKani are free. Think of them as a taster to see if you like the site or not. Once you hit level 3, you will need to buy either a monthly or years sub to continue using the site. The wait time between reviews can’t be changed unfortunately. It’s designed this way to force you to review at exactly the right moment. You also can’t do selective study or skip over any cards like you can with Anki. I’ve heard people say the site starts off painfully slow at first but does gather pace the more you level up.

The WaniKani forum has quite a few TextFugu members but also a lot of non TextFugu members too. I think overall, it’s probably the more in demand product. The non TextFugu members are either learning grammar with other resources or are past what TextFugu currently offers. I agree that the TextFugu forums can seem like a bit of a ghost town at times, but it does have it’s busy days too.

Thank you for the quick response–it answered my question perfectly!

I loved what I saw in the first level. I am just unsure about paying that money so quickly. I think I’ll probably try using textfugu+anki. I’m also learning kanji from a workbook and a tutor (not just Kanji, we cover everything). The problem with this tutor is that I have had it for 4 years and there is still some contents on TF I am not strong on. I think the issue is that the tutor is only once a week…

I am seriously considering all these options though. Textfugu has been great review so far and as I said I see some things in the contents that I don’t know much about.

Wani kani would be great as well, but I got textfugu lifetime for 60$, and wanikani doesn’t have a lifetime option… T.T It’s still cheap, but I’m POSITIVE I wouldn’t be able to get the 1000 kanji a year like it claims…

At the beginning, it’s kinda slow.  But as you progress, lessons will come in greater numbers.

Thank you! Another curious question: How do the reviews stack?

Like, when you have completed more than one lesson, what are you reviewed on?

    Thanks again<3

The reviews are timed, meaning it can vary (from my experience) between 1 minute or 2 days between each one. Although the 2 day gap has only happened to me once so far. 99% of the time it will be shorter than that. If you let your reviews pile up, that also affects when the next one will be I imagine.

It’s a great site, good design and graphics. More interesting to learn than the Anki route. I don’t know if it’s the best deal out there though.

I keep getting WaniKani emails reminding me of the new lessons I’ve got but I’m way too lazy to log on and try it out. After reading this thread it seems like I should.

One thing I forgot to add is, if you let your reviews pile up, it doesn’t actually tell you how many you have. This is a clever tactic from Koichi so you don’t get put off from doing your reviews. Once you have more than 42 reviews due, it stops showing you the exact amount. It just says 42+. Koichi mentions the number 42 throughout TextFugu too. I think it has something to do with a movie.

42 is from the book “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams (which has indeed been made into a movie). Long story short “42″ is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything. Try googling “the answer to life the universe and everything” :-)

I can strongly recommend reading the book(s) by the way!

Nothing to do with wani-kani whatsoever; just thought I would share :P

Edit: Made link open in a new window.

Edit 2: Apparently that does not work. -.-

Tofugu, TextFugu and WaniKani are all littered with references to Hitchiker’s Guide. It’s only to be expected from “a cool frood who knows where his towel’s at” like Koichi.

I haven’t read/watched hitchikers guide for a while, so is the pet bald eagle thing a reference?
