Hello, my name is Cory and I am a beginner in terms of the Japanese language. Ever since I was in elementary school I have had a fascination/interest in the Japanese culture and language. Recently I have had a strong urge to understand the Japanese language because I intend to visit the country some day, if not live there. I am currently in college pursuing a Computer Science degree and I am hoping to get a programming job in Japan on a temporary basis, if not long-term if I enjoy living there.

I am also curious if anyone here knows how well programming jobs in Japan pay and any other details about them? The only info I can really find on the internet about it are jobs for game programming but that is not what I am interested in; I am more interested in software programming… and maybe web programming, but not really. I don’t fully know what I want to focus on yet but I do know I want to be a programmer. I am currently proficient in the Java programming language and I also plan on getting used to C++.

I also have a huge interest in anime and manga but that is not one of the main reasons I am studying Japanese though. However, being able to read the original source of anime and manga on my own, and not from a translation, would be nice and fun to do.

    Welcome!

I have to admit I’m no expert on finding jobs in Japan, but my understanding is that unless it’s a job that specifically requires you to be an English speaker (say, teaching English) then a Japanese company would prefer to hire a native Japanese speaker regardless of the level of ability in that job. Don’t want to discourage you, though. Maybe there’s American companies based in Japan?

Well lets say I passed the jlpt N1 test, would that bring me closer to the “level of importance” of a native Japanese speaker? They will probably still be biased but that could relieve some of the worry of hiring a non-native Japanese speaker.
