Hi my name in Megami (or Natalia IRL). I am an Australian who now lives in the UK. I studied Japanese for four years at highschool, promptly forgot it all and managed to embarrass myself with how little I could use on two trips I have made to Japan, including one last year with my husband and son. So have taken the step to finally get back in to learning. Oh, and as a little aside later this year I start a new university degree in French and German, so language-a-go-go around here this year!

I am a huge fan of many aspects of Japanese culture, both the traditional and modern, in terms of design, fashion, aesthetics and literature (yes, I have read the whole of The Tale of Genji, but in translation). So my learning the language is twofold – to be able to travel to Japan and understand more of what is going on around me, and also to have a deeper appreciation of many things I love.

I look forward to meeting you all here at Textfugu!

Welcome! :D Totally feel you on the idea that learning Japanese allows for a deeper enjoyment of the culture, and I, too, find that the more I learn about Japanese culture in any time period, the more interested I am in the culture as a whole, including the language. It’s nice when things are self-reinforcing like that, isn’t it? ;)

Congrats on beginning your new degree, too! Someday I’ll join the second-degree club … and maybe I’ll even manage to connect mine to Japan … ;D

Sorry it took me so long to reply – I live near Salisbury (actually just as close if not closer to Stonehenge)

    @ Megami
No worries. I’m in West Sussex. We’re not too far away from each other. There’s several other UK users here on TF.
