Hello fellow Textfugu members. My name is Eric and I recently started my Japanese language learning journey here. I’m kind of a goofball, which is actually what drew me into Textfugu over all the other possible ways of learning Japanese. People here seem pretty down to Earth and – perhaps more importantly – really motivated to learn Japanese, so I hope to get to know some of you better over time. The following is a brief (by my standards, I tend to be pretty long-winded, my apologies in advance) description of why I decided to learn Japanese after graduating college recently:

    1) To help aleaviate boredom and give me something to do in my free time while I look for a job (a temporary job, see #3).

    2) To keep learning despite being out of school. School has been a constant in my life for the past 22 years… so it seems weird to me to not be learning something new. Plus, I genuinly like learning new things and I’ve always wanted to learn Japanese (and Chinese, but that will have to wait a while).

    3) In preparation to live/work in Japan for a year or more before grad school. That sentence gave a lot away but yeah. I want to go to grad school at some point down the road, but before then (and before taking on more debt) I really want to teach English and live in Japan for a year or more, ideally with the JET program.

Aside from learning Japanese I would say that I have two other hobbys which include playing/producing music (both electronic music production and live sound recording) and cycling. So if you want to talk music I’m your guy. I don’t know that there is much to talk about when it comes to bikes… it’s more of a lifestyle thing. Oh and of course I watch waaaaaaay too much anime whoooooo! Bikes and music and cheap beer and anime and stuff and things!

    Hi Eric,

Welcome! What do you want to study in grad school? Good luck with all of your goals!

    AikiBujin,

As far as the music I’m into listening to goes I like just about everything from “classical” (I put that in quotes because most people tend to apply the term “classical” to just about and western art music e.g. music from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Post-Romantic periods) music, jazz, rock, ska, blue grass, soul, pop, EDM, etc. Seriously it would take less time to list the music I’m not into, which includes most mainstream country and hip-hop music and I guess any black metal/death metal/pigsqueel screaming stuff. And my opinion on those genres is simply that I don’t enjoy listening to them, but generally I don’t engage in discussions of what aught and aught not exist in music, to each his own.

And as  far as the music I make goes, currently I’ve been working on a lot of Glitch Hop, because the Glitch Mob is one of my primary influences, as well as and House-ish type stuff. If I had my way I’d be writing more Trip Hop (think Emancipator/Bonobo) and DnB though. When I was younger I played in rock/ska bands cause I played guitar, trumpet and french horn. I only really play the guitar now and not as well as sixteen year old me would have liked. There is a bit more to the story but I feel like this has gone on too long as it is.

    Do you write any music?

    Cassandra,

My ultimate goal is to work on either the business or the legal side of the entertainment industry, as such I’m kind of torn between getting an MBA or going to law school to pursue a concentration in intellectual property. I also wouldn’t mind working for a company like Apple or Google because they are often at the forefront of technology, and technology drives intellectual property. I have some soul searching to do, but I think learning Japanese could be a great additional skill to have in either of these areas. :D

    Eric,

Japanese and an MBA or law degree sounds like a great combination and a very interesting career. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Trip-hop is pretty sweet. I saw both Emancipator (who’s from my hometown!) and Bonobo last year.

Anyway, welcome to TextFugu and good luck with your studies!

That’s awesome Hashi, small world. I’ve seen Bonobo but I’ve yet to catch Emancipator live, though it’s deffinitely on my to-do list considering I listen to his stuff all-the-time.
