    In Japanese if you want to say something like “Have you been to Japan?”  would you say:

    日本に行ったことがある?

    Or should you just simply say “Did you go to Japan?”

    日本に行った?

    Yeah, you would say it exactly the way you wrote it, I believe.

    “Have you been to Japan?” 日本に行ったことがある? You could add a のto the end if you wanted to.

    “Did you go to Japan?” 日本に行った?You could add a のto the end if you wanted to.

    In fact, for that last sentence, I personally would even add a かafter the の.  Thus, 日本に行ったのか?
