Hello! Learning Japanese is something that I have been curious about doing for several years — I tend to enjoy games and other media from Japan, and I am generally intrigued by (my limited understanding of) Japanese culture and history. So I would really love to be able to read/write/type Japanese so that I can play games (and maybe give Manga a shot?), and eventually be able to listen/speak so that I can watch anime/movies and travel (or maybe live) there. I visited earlier this year for a couple weeks (after the earthquakes :( ) and l can’t wait to go back. Hopefully next time I’ll be able to say more than “konnichiwa” and “arigato”!

I’ve been learning for about a week now and have mostly memorized Hiragana (although I am very slow still) and have just started to learn some basic vocab while I start learning Katakana. I came across this site, read some of the free articles, and it seems like it will make a great resource in my efforts towards learning Japanese.

Welcome Aaron. Good luck with your learning. I’m going thru Season 1 now and like you still slow at the reading part.

Welcome to the Fugu cult! Once you’ve got ひらがな and カタカナ out of the way, learning Japanese becomes alot more fun, I think!

I hope you’ll find once you’ve been at it for a while, like I did, that learning Japanese has the most welcome “side-effect” of improving your memory retention in general. Though this might not happen until a few months in. The mnemonic tricks provided in season 1 are also great for remembering all kinds of things.

    Best of luck to you.

    Hello Aaron and welcome!!

Like Lee, I too am still on season 1. I pretty much have Hiragana down but I want to make sure I know it really well before continuing, but if you’re already on Katakana that’s awesome!!

Best of luck with your studies! :D

    Thanks guys!

I’ve only bulk-written the Katakana vowels and K/S/T/N — just enough to have a little exposure and recognize the easy ones (“se” is nice). The reason for this is that I started on Human Japanese, and their method has you learn Katakana directly after Hiragana. I intend to go through TextFugu in order and at a reasonable pace, so I think I’ll be in Season 1 for some time.

    Hi Aaron, and welcome :)

I’ve also started reading Human Japanese (on the iPhone) a bit before I came to TextFugu. I learned Hiragana mostly from it, but, even after going through the Katakana for a while, it didn’t “stick” with me (probably because I was reading a lot more Hiragana and hence getting more practice for it). But hopefully, now that I met Anki, things will go a lot smoother…

Enjoy learning a great language :)
