Hi, my name is Steven, I’m 22 years old and I’m from Ontario, Canada; currently residing there as well. Hope to be able to utilize the forums and the vast amount of information or help it’s members may be able to offer. But of course! I’m not here simply to use members for their expertise. I’ll be looking to possibly make friends and most importantly, I feel, I’ll be looking for inspiration to stay motivated and focused. I’m sure this will be the most valuable asset the TextFugu forums may provide.

I’ll keep my reason for learning Japanese short and sweet. I’ve been fascinated by Japanese culture since I was roughly 7 years old as my dad took me there on a business trip. I’m not really into anime or pop culture (this makes things slightly more difficult as I really dislike anime). I like how tidy, clean, and considerate the people seem to be. I have been there many times since the trip with my dad and every time I go it becomes harder to leave. I’d like to learn the language to give me more opportunities to one day work and become a well integrated member of society (alas, I do know a foreigner never fully integrates but I will be more than happy to just be accepted to an extent and also be a productive member of society)

Thank you for your time and thank you in advance for any assistance I surely will need.

Hey, welcome. You are a lot like myself. While i am REALLY new here, i too have been fascinated with the Japanese, while not being crazy for the “Otaku” culture. What really inspired me to learn was after the 3/11 tsunami. When i saw the destruction and discord, i was astonished and speechless.

Then i saw that the people would wait in lines, sometimes for hours, to get into a simple grocery store and get food. That footage on the news strangely struck me with awe. Where i live, those stores would have been looted and ransacked instantly. But the Japanese are so diligent in following direction. It is so backwards from where i live, where the general attitude is “me first, and SCREW YOU.” Everything they did was as they were asked.

I cannot wait to visit one day. Glad you are learning with the rest of us man.

Every drop in the bucket helps fill it!

Thanks Stanton. I read your post about the dream. You must have really been cramming! I studied Hiragana and Katakana independently from TextFugu over a period of about a week. To be fair, there was only roughly 6 hours committed to learning to read it expertly and I’ll still practice writing all the time to refine my penmanship. But as far as the kanji go… That dream of yours reflects the feeling of studying kanji pretty well. It’s overwhelming but I’m hoping TextFugu will come through on that front.

Thanks for the kind and welcoming words!
