Hello everyone. So I started the free lessons on text fugu about 2 weeks ago and have now moved into the paid membership and am really excited to be learning Japanese. I moved to Japan about a month ago and live in a community where virtually zero english is spoken. I came here with zero background in Japanese. I am an assistant english teacher at a school in my community. I am very excited about learning japanese.

My main concern is eventual burnout. Though, I am pretty motivated because the more I learn the more i can function in everyday life. The otherday it took me 45 minutes to find non fat milk at the grocery store (and I still got the wrong one). I also want to interact with the staff members at my school and people in the community.

The great thing about Textfugu and learning japanese is that everything I have learned is immediatelly applicable as I see hiragana, katakana, and Kanji everyday. Being in Japan I also hear Japanese everyday :).

Welcome to TextFugu, it seems like a very solid motivation that you have. Living in Japan you will have to learn Japanese, so I doubt that you will burn out.

Laughed at the milk part :D

    Good luck @ TextFugu

ps. You are lucky living in Japan :P (I am a litle envious)

Hello! First of all, you are so lucky to be learning Japanese while you live in Japan. What an awesome opportunity!

If you’re worried about eventual burnout, just monitor how much studying you do. Don’t study for six hours one day and then nothing for the next week. Try to aim for consistency, something manageable for the long haul.

Bummer about not getting the right milk! You’ll figure it out. :)

    Good luck with everything!

Thanks! I agree that it is important that I consistently study everyday (rather than trying to cram it down all in one day).

I am a super beginner and am on the lessons learning how to ask questions with ka and how to use des.

The cool thing is that I notice these little things being used in daily life here… Though I miss the rest of their sentences completely.

Also, i was able to successfully find non fat milk… Though now I cant determine which “iced coffee” is actually coffee. I keep buying items that say in english “coffee” on them but when I taste them they are way closer to chocolate milk than coffee. That is the thing that has made me laugh continuously while I have been in this small town… The only time anything is written in English it doesn’t align with the item i think it is. Just gives me greater incentive to learn :)
