So, with christmas coming soon, it means I’ll be getting some money to spend on something nice and I thought getting myself a nice (smart)phone with wifi and stuff would be a good idea. Considering my computer keeps acting up from time to time, it’d be good to have an alternative for doing Anki reps and general studying (and let’s face it – I just wanna be able to use wifi at school to relieve boredom).

So, it has to be fairly cheap (I only have around 200$ to spend), don’t care about games, has to have a big screen (or as big as it gets, for this price) so browsing the internet and using Anki will be at least semi-comfortable. I’d also like for it to have Android as the OS. Apps, apps, apps.

Yeah, there are tons of pages about cheap Android phones, comparing them inside and out, I know. But perhaps someone here also has suggestions :p I’ve been thinking about Samsung Galaxy Gio, as it’s about the right price, at least where I live, and it’s been getting very positive reviews. Any thoughts, guys?

You might be able to find a Nexus S for cheap, despite being single core it has really good performance offering a super smooth experience. It’s also getting Ice Cream Sandwich officially very soon. The screen is gorgeous too. If you ever get into rooting and installing custom versions of Android you can get around 2-3 days of battery really easily. Mine is sitting on 57% left with 1 day 19 hours of usage according to the battery meter. Of course that is light usage, no phone is going to last that long with a ton of 3G web browsing. :P

The screen is just amazing though, once you see an AMOLED you won’t want to go back. It blends into the bezel seamlessly and uses less power when black is displayed, because the screen sort of turns off to display black, it’s pretty weird but yeah, they are great screens!
