I’m wondering, is there something out there that can help you practice writing out the characters themselves?
I can recognize the characters, but my handwriting is terrible.

What I did when I started out TextFugu, was look up the kanji that I learned on http://jisho.org, write down the stroke order, and practice writing the character in a notebook. You can alternatively use something like http://jensechu.github.io/kanji/ , but you’ll have to look up the kanji by JLPT level, and then print out worksheets for you to practice your writing.

When it comes to Kanji I think once you master the radicals and get used to the stroke order it should look pretty good. Even when you write more advanced characters you don’t know, it still follows the same concept. At least that’s how it is for me, but then again I learned how to write Chinese since I was a lid so I might not be able to sympathize as much.
