I really don’t know why I’m learning Japanese…. almost half way through Season 2 now.  I’m originally from Canada, but am now attempting a bachelors degree in Germany.  After seeing all the similarities between English and German, I wanted to try something that was completely different.  I’ve now discovered that Japanese incorporates a bunch of English vocabulary, but the other differences are fascinating.  Anyway, if I don’t find another use for Japanese, at least I’ll be able to watch anime in the original language.

I’d like to visit Japan sometime, just because the culture differences are fascinating, but I don’t know if I’ll make it happen.  By visit, I consider a two week vacation insufficient.  I’m not a tourist kind-of person, so seeing famous sites isn’t exciting to me.  I would be more interested in experiencing everyday life there: what is it like grocery shopping in Japan?  How do people interact?  Etc.  I think I’d need to live there for at least a year.  I plan to be in Germany for at least two more years, and I have no idea what I’ll be doing after that, so, I’ll just have to play it by ear.

    TextFugu rocks by the way!

Brian, I hope you’re able to find more reasons for learning Japanese! :)

I’m like you; a two week visit isn’t sufficient, though I do believe it’s better than nothing! I hope you get the opportunity to experience every day life in Japan.

    Best wishes on your studies!

I may never get to Japan either but there is a PC disk I purchased called “Go Go Nippon” which is sort of a narrated tourist guidebook using anime girls and RL pix. It’s cheap (<$15) and fun to do. Your two guides are Makoto’s the older “onee-chan” type, and Akira…a “tsundere”. I also picked up some Japanese vocab with the game.

There are links to Google Maps throughout the game so you can explore on the internet as well.

The Japanese explanations of stuff get even more long-winded when they start describing areas of places. Like dam, Ginza especially had a complex explanation of its history. Its also one of the only places I’ve played LOL
    Good thing theres also English
