So yeah, I just joined, and I guess I’ll just let you guys know why I’m studying Japanese:
1. I’ve always loved the Japanese culture. Something about it is fascinating to me. I highly respect the people, considering how awesome they are. I love how they work, and I love how for the most part, they don’t feel like their job is too low for them. I’ve been to Japan twice, and both times, I realized when I landed in the first American airport on the way home why I left in the first place. I also have a very large interest(which in the future shall be a passion) for linguistics. I’m pretty sure I got it from Uhura.
2. As I previously mentioned, I’ve been to Japan before(my sister is in the Air Force, and I decided to take advantage of the situation), and there was one instance where I had to use the little knowledge I knew at a buffet in Tokyo Disney Sea. It was super embarrassing because I forgot that 九十 was ninety and not nineteen. I thought the waitress had said we had a nineteen minute wait before we could eat, when she really said we had ninety minutes to eat. Of course, I realized after like, 5 minutes what she truly meant, but It will never happen again. Ever.
3. I’m seriously considering using Japanese in a career, such as entering the Air Force as a linguistics officer or translating in the UN. You kind of have to know a language in order to use it in a career, so…
4. Bilingual people are sexy.

Hello and welcome David! I think planning on using Japanese in your future career is a great way to stay motivated (obligation/necessity is a superb motivator). It’s great that you are already seriously thinking about the future at 14. It will pay off big time in the years to come!
In order to get a profile icon, you should follow this step (taken from Koichi’s “Forum How-To” thread):
Get a profile image
Set up a gravatar at http://gravatar.com with the same email you’re using for TextFugu. It should automatically appear a bit after setting it up (sometimes you have to give it a little time, though).

Here’s what you do:
First follow the instructions in the bottom link
http://www.textfugu.com/bb/topic/forum-how-to/Then you’ll probably want a profile picture to use. What you do is you go to this site and you find a picture you reeeeeeeeealy like then you make that your profile picture. The pictures themselves will be too big to be avatar but you can manually crop a section of it yourself on the gravatar site.

Out of curiosity when were you born? I’m 14 too, 15 next january. If someone is younger than me I’ll feel old…
Oh… It probably would have been beneficial to look at the “how to” forum… I never got into forum posting, so this is kind of a new thing to me. Ahaha, it’s like I’m my grandma when she got a Facebook. Thanks, you guys!
