Okay, here’s my problem, and I’m pretty sure you’ve also encountered this one, so please hear me out :)

I’m a big fan of Lang-8, and I use it almost every day to try out various things that come to my mind and then add it to my Lang-8 Anki deck.
Now, whenever I don’t know a verb in japanese I go to jisho.org, check the “common words only” box and search for it, but very often there are 2-4 verbs that have up to 20 different meanings, including the one I am searching for.
Now the problem is, most of the time I end up using the wrong verb, because it’s not commonly used for this meaning :D

Is there any good way to figure this out instead of trial and error?

On jisho.org, look at the example sentences for each one. This will give you a good idea of the context in which it is used.

Aye, that’s exactly the problem with dictionaries. Like kanjiman said, context.

And if there isn’t much to go by in the examples, use Space ALC. That phrase search has given me insight that I haven’t found anywhere else.
