I must admit, so far I have very limited vocabulary and stuff, so I’m going only from sample of size N=2, but still:

    です pronounced ‘des’
たすけて pronounced ‘taskete’ (here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnLGWph0VZ0&feature=youtu.be&t=515 and in bunch of other anime(s? is it animes?))

So is common pronunciation ‘s’ and ‘su’ only in some cases? Or the other way around and I just have bad sample?

    Thank you for help :)

Basically, it’s pronounced whichever way makes it easier to hit the next syllable. As, the power that generations of lazy speakers has over etymology.

すし, for example, is “sushi”, otherwise you’re trying to say “s-shi”.
