Can anyone help me with RTK? I have started to read the book vol 1 and have read about 55 Kanji. Do I keep going or do I stop and review them on the RTK website? I was thinking for every 50 Kanji I do, I then review all of them for awhile on the website until i know them all and how to wright them. What do you think? :) Thanks for helping!
Oh and I have the 4th Edition of the book, but I find it hard to understand James W. Heisig it’s like he speaks with riddles some times. He doesn’t seem to speak (write) just plain old simple English. I’m just a confused dummy who needs help! ( ^-^) Thanks everyone!
I plan on working on dakuten again today and refreshing since I’ve been away for a while

Just thought I would try splitting out the question about RTK so it doesn’t get buried in other study info.
Murasaki337 – Are you using an SRS with RTK? If not, you have two great options – Anki or the kanji.koohii website. Pick one and add the kanji you’ve studied. This way you can study the kanji like you do with vocabulary or kana. The program will tell you when you need to review and this will help put it into your long term memory. Hope that helps! :)
Should we remake a single RTK thread, if me or you makes it we can give a good explanation and links in the original post.

I have a question about RTK. I’ve been reading different peoples’ views on using this; some positive, some negative, but I’d like to ask you people here since a lot of you seem to use it.
Is it really the best/quickest way to learn Kanji? I assume it’s strictly for being able to write kanji from memory and basically know what it means? I’m hesitant on this method because it doesn’t teach you the readings… and that’s really why I like Koichi’s approach to teaching Kanji, because I get all (or most) of the readings along with the meaning.
I’ll admit I started on it probably a month ago, but not knowing the readings to the kanji I was learning really bugged me a lot.. so I stopped.
Do you use any other methods alongside RTK that helps with learning readings (besides this website, of course)? I’ve tried looking up various things, but I never can tell what would be reliable or not a complete waste of time.
Oh, I guess that was two questions.
Firstly, do it. Just do it. It’s really the best thing I could have ever done in regards to Japanese learning :) I guess you don’t realise the benefit until you’re a big chunk through it, but it’s so goddamn useful. It may seem a chore but the benefits are surprisingly big.
Secondly, now that I’m finished, I use TextFugu for the important readings. Really though, there are some readings that you’ll just “pick up” as you go through vocab because they are so common. Learning readings beforehand definitely helps, but it’s not strictly necessary.
Let’s face it, TextFugu’s kanji section isn’t getting finished this decade, so it’s best to find something to supplement it :P
I’ve answered the “should I do it question?” so many times on here now XD Every time I basically say “yes”. Go for it :) Trust us (me, winterpromise31 and Sheepy) ;).
I think I kind of knew the answer already… but it helps to see someone tell me to do it, somehow. Kind of like.. a push, I guess? I’ll take your word for it, buckle down and do it then. :P
You’re right about the kanji section here. I guess Koichi isn’t a robot, after all. (damn) …

^ No problem ;) RTK sorta gets your brain “used” to seeing kanji, makes them less scary. So you can see the word 飛行機（ひこうき）[aeroplane] and be like “ah, it’s just made up of ‘fly/going/mechanism’ – makes sense *happyface*” instead of thinking “oh god… mass of black lines… kill it with fire… can’t take much more…” ;) You might not get what I mean by “getting used to seeing kanji” until you experience the process yourself, though – it’s a fantastic feeling of real progress :)

I understand what you mean by getting used to seeing it. I recognize all of the Kanji (in between the BLACK MASS OF SCARY SQUIGGLIES) I’ve learned so far when I’m looking at Japanese on Twitter; I’ve followed some Japanese bands that I keep up with and look at everyday. It helps, even though I don’t know a lot of what they’re saying without mousing over the words.
Actually, I’ve learned quite a few words just by doing that because a lot of what they say is repeated (places in Japan, days, months and such), so I get used to seeing it in posts. Makes me feel good to be able to read some words and confident enough to know what they are without having to mouseover. So it does make a lot of sense.
Bah.. I wish I hadn’t of stopped. I could probably be so far right now. T_T

Lemur – Best to just jump in and get moving rather than regret where you could have been. ;) There’s no way to change the past but you can do something about today!

Sheepy – If you could write up a post about RTK, that would be awesome. I’m kind of flailing a bit with the reviews and I know I’m not getting the benefit from it that I should be. Right now I’m not a good person to write a rah-rah post about it, even though I know it’s a great resource. ;)
Some quick questions regarding this: How many new Kanji do you (usually) learn per day? Does it vary depending on difficulty? I’m trying to do 100 ~ ish per day, but wondering if that would be more difficult the deeper I get into it.
@Lemur – it generally gets easier as you go on. Although depending on your retention rate it might get hectic. If you are almost always getting them right then keep on rocking, if your review stack just keeps increasing in size, cut back a bit.
Speaking of review stack, I jumped back on RevTK since abandoning it for anki at the start of section 3. I’m using anki for kanji>keyword now and though I’d get back on RevTK for keyword>kanji. Only 1583 reviews. No biggie.
