I’m going through Sentences 5 (I think, they’re all mixed in the sentences master deck) and I came across this card that I don’t quite understand:

    一人じゃありませんでした

I can read it just fine, but the meaning on the card is: “(I) was not alone.” What I expected it to be was “It was not one person.” based on the kanji vocab decks.

This is probably not a mistake, but is my interpretation of it wrong? Is it a contextual thing?

Yep. Context. Japanese is a much more contextual language than English, so often the meaning of sentences can rely very heavily on the context.

    Cool, thanks Joel.

Context is sort of a tough thing to infer on cards!
