Lil’ help?
With the verb 会います should I use を or に?
I’d assumed it would be を, but I’ve had some Lang-8 corrections saying I should use に?
September 8, 2012 at 11:45 pm #35299に is the most used, but you can also use と. Because 会う is an intransitive verb, it has no direct object, and so を is never used.
September 9, 2012 at 8:59 am #35301It’s 「に」。 Contrary to what some people think, it is NEVER 「と」。
Worked with a partner on a dialouge and was docked maybe half a point or so because of that. Kinda mad at myself being an AKB fan and they keep repeating 「AKBに会いにいける!」. Also was kinda mad at my partner because he’s the one who changed that one part to と.

AnonymousLol way to get praise for that
September 9, 2012 at 1:51 pm #3530998.5? Such a failure, Ken-san. =P However, I don’t think a docked mark in one speech indicates that と is never used.
I’ll stand by my claim that と is an acceptable alternative, and is simply incorrect in this particular context. と indicates the action is bi-directional – both the meeter and the meetee have actively collaborated to ensure the meeting takes place. In your sentence, you’re going in order to meet the singer, but the singer isn’t making plans to meet you – it’s unidirectional.
I will say (as I kind of said in my prior post but didn’t really emphasise) that に is way more commonly used, and is probably the safer option if you’re unsure.

I’ll assume transitive/instransitive verbs are covered later in Textfugu

No worries. Just replied to your email about Lang-8. Where are you up to on TextFugu?
September 12, 2012 at 8:15 pm #35359@ kman – Cool. Season 5, the casuals (sounds like a Hollywood movie). Think you may be past there, you’re burning through it!
September 22, 2012 at 10:36 am #35603Can someone explain the difference between ending a sentence with だったから。and だったからだ。?
I found the latter in a novel, and don’t get what the final だ is about.
September 22, 2012 at 10:38 am #35604Give context
September 22, 2012 at 10:55 am #35605方やがかんしゃくを起こして、コーンフレークを皿ごと壁に投げつている最中だったからだ。
My guess would be to distinguish it from the particles から.
