    Hi all,

I’d be very interested in suggestions as to things other people can do to help a person learn via textfugu. I’m sure a lot of us have friends and family who would like to help us but don’t know how!

I ask as my girlfriend is quite proactive in some ways and goes ahead and prints out a bunch of kanji worksheets for me that she’s found on the web, and it breaks my heart to see the look on her face when I say they’re not terribly useful given the way textfugu teaches kanji… (I try and break the news gentler than that, of course)

So what sort of things can we suggest that our loved ones can do to help us?

My gf’s already helping out by asking some basic questions for me to respond to (based purely on what she has picked up from me while I have been learning) and I’m planning to put together some colour coded cards with a chart to show her how she can basically put them together in order to ask me valid questions.

I was thinking something like nouns on blue cards, wa on a yellow card, desu/jaarimasen etc. on green cards, ka on a red card, then a key that says various patterns like blue-yellow-blue-green-red – does this sound like a good plan? (edit: I realise that this may only work for a short while until I learn something that breaks it)

Anyhow all suggestions welcomed, doesn’t have to be like what I’ve mentioned, anything goes – let’s get a bunch of ideas in this thread for people to use!

    Cheers guys!

You are right. Thats a good idea for now but without her learning/really knowing Japanese it can’t last very long.

I think for me the most important thing is motivating me. If I had to study something I asked my family to remind me occasionally about studying. Just asking me how its coming along or if I was sat in front of the TV getting my mum to say “you could be studying now” was really helpful.

Another thing that your girlfriend could do is to make like little tests for you. You could give her your vocab lists and she could pick a few English words and ask you for the Japanese. Also if you know there is a test coming you feel more motivated. You could do the same with the kanji. Give her the list of the radicals and kanji you should know and she can make little flash cards to show you.

Drilling you in vocab and kanji I think is the only way to go once you get to a certain level with the grammar.

    I hope that was helpful.
