    Hi, Textfugu members.
I’ve been working on Textfugu for quite some time, and I’ve been happy with the service and my progress. Respectfully, I find the end of Season 3 and the beginning of Season 4 to be slow.

Specifically, Season 3 ends with 51 verbs to study. At the start of Season 4, 23 な Adjectives are followed by 43 い Adjectives. (Plus some Kanji along the way.) Simply put, it’s a ton of information.

I think this is a great time to reenforce what I know, but I feel like I’m not making much progress on other fronts, like sentence structure. So, I figured I’d ask what others have done during this particular portion of their studies. Any tips, alternative lessons, and methodologies would be greatly appreciated; Even if it’s just a “How I Did it” kind of post, I may still get some hints out of it.

To be honest, that grind made me drop TextFugu (again) for quite a while. What eventually got me through it is me going “screw it” and I actually pushed on without memorizing all the new vocab, even when the lessons stressed learning it first. That lesson with all the nouny adverbs? I know maybe half right now, and I don’t care about memorizing the rest immediately. I’ll get to it eventually. With TextFugu, I’ve actually dropped a lot of things to keep it interesting. I’m using an outside source for learning kanji now (and I tried Wanikani, but hated it), and I’m basically just utilizing TextFugu for grammar lessons and some vocab at this point. Is it efficient? Probably not. Is it helping me get back into regular lessons and keeping me interested? You bet it is. Sometimes you have to do what works best for yourself. The main thing is to not burn yourself out, even if that means contradicting the lessons (something I had to learn the hard way).

Right now though, I’m right about to start Season 5, and I have a good handle on most of the verbs, the adjectives, and probably half the adverbs. I just keep chipping at it little by little on Anki between lessons.

Honestly, I’m really hoping that whenever we get EtoEto, it paces itself a bit better, but I might be done with TextFugu before that sees the light of day. Was hoping it’d come out before I got back into my Japanese lessons, but got tired of waiting for it.

Thanks for the advice, Bethany; I appreciate it. I reached my first case of burnout at the second Verb List, and I’ve been extremely careful ever since.

I took a look ahead, and, as you said, 32 “Nouny” Adverbs appear later in the Season. (Plus Kanji and 17 colors.) I think I’ll try your method, since I’m extremely interested in particles and grammar. I’ll just keep a list of what vocab I haven’t finished studying.

You can lower the amount of new cards in Anki too… I’m currently in that grip XD trying to learn all the na-adjectives right now.

For the verbs, I just get to it every morning, first thing, and I adopted the X calendar so I won’t tell myself that today is not a good day to study ! 6 X so far.
I also found so memonics but with french (my native langage) I could not learn きめます so I found the memonic “Je décide qui me masse les fesses!” which means “I decide who massage my bum.”
I’m a little bit lost to not have the sentence deck to study at the end of the lesson thou… I think I’m going to make one… because I learn vocabulary much faster in context.

Thanks for the replies, Bethany and Roxane. After some careful thought, I’m going to go with Bethany’s recommendation of not overloading on vocab. That way, I can learn in smaller, manageable segments while continuing my grammar studies.

While thinking about this decision, I did extensive research on textbooks, such as Genki. I was thinking of buying Japanese for Busy People Vol. 1 (Kana Edition) as a supplement. However, I’m not sure what’s best, especially for someone that has completed Seasons 1-3 of TextFugu.

If anyone has any input, I’d appreciate the info!

I studied with Japanese for Busy People. It’s pretty good, though there’s a little bit of emphasis towards the sort of language you’d use in a business setting. Studied at uni with Nakama as well.
