七 is a weird one in that its readings tend to be fairly interchangeable. 四 as well, to a slightly lesser extent.

Inflection was mentioned a few times during early lessons at uni, but then never again. Ever. Sooo… yeah.

So long as you finish your questions with an upwards inflection, people will get that you’re asking a question. Don’t, though, do what some people do where they start high and just keep getting higher and higher as the question wears on, until by the end of it they can shatter glass. =P It’s more of an upwards flick right at the end.

Any other things I must do whilst in Tokyo?

Ghibli Museum, without a doubt. Tokyo Tower and/or Skytree? Or just find some random neighbourhood and go wander. =)

I’ve been making a big list of stuff to do next time I can go to Japan, I think largely because they’re places I saw on TV shows which looked pretty. Not sure how exciting they’d be for you. Or which are doable in winter. My Tokyo list includes things like Mount Takao, the Shin-Yokohama Ramen Museum, Ivan’s Ramen, Arisugawa Park in Hiroo, Todoroki Keikoku and Funabashi in Setagaya, have a ride of the Enoden in Kanagawa or the Toden Arakawa streetcar line. Et cetera.

Well, you’re unlikely to get any funny looks if you pronounce it as written, but you also need to understand it being spoken to you. 千円 honestly does sound like “sen yen” or “sei yen”. 原因 regularly comes up in drama series as “gei yin”.

One of the AKB48 members has turned into a guy?

That’s going to cause no end of controversy…

は is the topic particle は. The topic particle marks the topic in a sentence, and it’s very much not just used for “I am”, “you are” type sentences. こんにちは is 今日は – “this day is…” something something. Don’t ask me why, it’s some etymology that’s never been explained to me. Similarly for こんばんは. こんにちわ is just incorrect.

As for ください versus 下さい, I think it’s just preference. I wouldn’t quote me on that, though.

Ooo, I’m kind of in it for the same reason – went there for a holiday, want to go back.

Did you take photos? Keep a travel blog? =D

Of course it is. Missingno is a member of AKB48, don’cha know? It’s why he’s such a rabid fan. =P

I can’t speak for “Koi-san”, but when え follows ん it tends to make a bit of a y-sound, simply from the effect of what mouth flaps are necessary to get the sounds out. So yes, 千円 sounds a bit like “sen yen”, or even “sei yen”.

    原因 (げんいん) does something similar.

Aye, I know. Imiwa’s got the same example sentence. For that matter, none of the example sentences are followed by a particle, but some of them do have separate direct objects.
