I don’t know if this is allowed here, but I would like to suggest something: You want to watch TV? You want to watch TV in Japanese? Maybe, you want to study these shows in your Anki decK. Maybe you would like some subtitles in Japanese to go along with this deck? Oh, you want english subtitles alongside your Japanese subtitles? Well…this is all possible.

I used to do this heavily, and then eventually (through my stubbornness rather than actual skill level being high enough) went to straight Japanese, no English.

I don’t have all the handy links, but there is plenty already well documented instructions from NukeMarine on kanji.koohii.com

    The main resource is http://www.d-addicts.com/
Here you can get the TV Shows, Jsubs and EngSubs.

Why watch a show that was made for an English audience where the jokes and translations don’t work 10% when you can watch a Japanese show where everything is 完璧.

Tsetycoon13 – I am quiet new to textfugu, so I don’t know how much help I can be; I can’t voucher for textfugu’s efficacy either, but…I think the whole point of this site is to instill certain traits in you that are productive and useful for learning a new language. Think of these skills or habits as the engine to your Japanese train and your motivation or desire as the gas. this site definitely helps give you gas in the beginning, but any third-party gas is not going to be as clean or powerful as gas you make yourself. I definitely have had my second-thoughts about learning Japanese and I have had tons of doubts in the efficacy of the methods I’ve chosen.

Just keep this in mind as you progress. This doesn’t just go for textfugu, but any methods or habits you use to learn Japanese: Do not get your ways set in stone to the point that it is no longer effective for you.

I’m not here to cast doubt on the textfugu method. I’m here to remind you to keep to keep a mental check and balance of what you are doing. I started with Pimsleur, grew out of it. Moved to Heisig method, finished it. Went to SRS sentences, got bored. That’s where I quit. Instead of quitting, I should have realized, maybe this is a good tool, but I shouldn’t be doing it 100% of the time.

That’s why I am here. To find new tools, new motivation and ultimately succeed at Japanese. In the end it is you that has to put in the work, it is you that has to understand the grammar and voacb. It is you that has to put forth the effort. Everything else is just a useful(hopefully) tool to use along the road.

Thanks Joel. I’ll keep that in mind. I learned 爪 as talon with Heisig’s method. I think I’ll just keep/relearn my stories as I go through Koichi’s method, and maybe pick up some cool tricks on the way. The worry in the back of my mind is if I think I can just skip all his beginner stuff, because I already know it, then I don’t have a good learning foundation for when I go into the intermediate stuff where I will actually be learning some new Japanese.

I think the key here is to just think critically and keep an open mind. I definitely won’t force myself to unlearn anything.

    Thanks.

Thanks Aikibujin. I think my biggest thing is going to be simply focusing on the textfugu method. For example: I already have a lot of kanji down, but I want to “relearn” using this method, so that I can use it going forward. Previously, I used the story method, which is probably very similar to this method from koohii.com. I might run into problems with this as I go, considering I already ingrained a good amount of keywords with certain radicals and compounds, but maybe I’ll just re-use them. We’ll see what textfugu has me do. Like I think textfugu calls the top radical of 学 velociraptor or something, and I just call it claws. This is probably just a sticking point for me right now, so I’ll probably power through it once I get a system down.

I’m definitely going to check out your anki2 page. Right now, I’m just throwing stuff in there as I go compounded on top of 10K core, which I don’t want to stop doing. Obviously, I’m throwing it all into a parent deck or else I’d be studying like 7 different decks right now. But I bet you have some other great tips on there that I should take advantage of.
