    I’m using these… http://nihongo-dekimasu.blogspot.com/2008/11/japanese-childrenbooks-practice-reading.html

They were posted in a thread called “Practicing Hiragana”

Thank you everyone. I assumed it was そ since it had the same basic shape, but had no clue, really. Personally, I handwrite the same as most fonts look. I learned my kana through learning to handwrite them, so that is probably why I’m cursed to be confused like this. I was aware of さ, ち, and き, but have never seen そ like that before.

Yo, I’m Kevin from IA. I’m almost 24 and just starting out on this craziness called Japanese. Started out liking it because of Anime/Manga, but lately I’ve kinda grown out of that. Right now I’m really into Japanese culture and music. I’m really hoping to visit and I’ve even considered Japanese Language school in Japan just to help me get down Japanese while also getting to go over there. That kinda seems out of reach right now though ( -_-’)

Nihonjin no Shiranai Nihongo – actually about Japanese Language (comedy though so uber cheesy)
Solanin – amazing movie. Main song was written by Asian Kung Fu Generation

Kids on the Slope – Anime currently airing on crunchyroll
Bakuman – Anime about writting manga; from the authors of Death Note
Chihayafuru – anime; Iffy if many will like this. Really realistic speaking for an anime though

Yeah, I’m still way early on. I just keep seeing people recommending so many things and have so many resources available that its kinda crazy. I’ll figure it out… eventually.

@Lost Gaijin Great minds must think alike! I’m already using a white board. I studied on phone (never thought I’d say that) and then review on the white board. Writing is great on the phone, but not that same as the real thing.

To be honest, I started this post without actually starting TextFugu. I just wanted to clarify my reasons for learning Japanese quick. What I wrote down for the first chapter is

“To eventually travel to Japan to possibly work and/or live. I would also like to possibly travel to study the language further. Also, to eventually be able to better help in efforts such as the 3/11 recovery and be able to connect with the Japanese people.”

I’m just hoping, as Koichi points out, that I stick with it and knowing my reasons helps me.

Nope, RealKana was one of my first ideas, but sadly wasn’t available. I’m currently using Omenkyo. It actually seems better than most other apps because it offers quizzes in 4 different ways of recognition. The best is the handwriting recognition practice. That was the key for me.

Thanks! The funny thing is that I haven’t even started Textfugu yet. I’ve been learning with a handy android program called Obenkyo. I found my key to learning is in learning through writing. I’ve also read that Japanese is best understood as a written language first then a vocal one second. The opposite of English. Still trying to grasp that. Anyway, thanks for the welcome!
