I really like anime, but I wasn’t offended at all.
As you pointed in your post, it’s not really that you don’t like anime, it’s more about the otaku sub-culture. I can agree with you on most of the points (all those teens thinking they know all about Japan because they watch Naruto can be really annoying).
In fact, the only thing that irked me a bit in the post is the “anime/manga/whatever other form of childish Japanese media” generalization. Anime and manga can be childish (and often is). They can also be very mature and thought-provoking (in some cases, much more than tons of movies I’ve seen).
Oh, and I agree that using ONLY anime to learn Japanese is a path to failure. However, in my case, I’ve been enjoying anime more and more since I’ve been on Textfugu, because it is a fine way to train the ear (yeah, I could use pretty much any subtitled Japanese media, but since I like anime…). Anyway, I’m spotting more and more words I know, sentences I understand, grammar points I’ve learned, etc. making the experience more interesting.
I already tried that, and it didn’t change a thing. Thanks anyway for your help ^^
Where do I find out the language packs installed on my system? I’ve spent the last 20 mins googling and the best I could find is this: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_programs/how-to-uninstall-extra-language-packs-from-windows/9ac2194d-1665-498d-8571-32e4cce6efa9
The first answer (Accola’s) was the best one (the one from the MS guy didn’t work; I can’t find language packs in the Windows Update list). When looking at the language packs to uninstall, I have this: http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/5189/languagepacks.png
Only French (which is mentioned to be the system language and default language). No English. Not even Japanese o_O
Very nice indeed. Announce it. Facebook it. Tweet it ^^
I already tweeted about it because it’s awesome; so do more tweets or retweet mine http://twitter.com/#!/Kelovar/statuses/77784344713887744
That looks interesting *_* I’ll certainly give it a read later too.
Somewhat related question: do Koichi and Danny Choo know/met each other? I mean, both are quite important internet figures in making the Japanese culture and sub-cultures more known to the world~
I haven’t solved the issue yet. In fact, I noticed it when I started with Textfugu a few months ago. However, now that I’m getting better in Japanese, that means I use it more and more in my log entries, switching more and more between input methods. This is more anoying now than it ever was xD
My settings are in that screenshot I linked in my first post (http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/3479/whyenglish.png ).
Non-unicode characters: Japanese
Default input language: French (Canada)
Installed services: French (Canada); Japanese (Japan)I’ll go for a second combo if everything else fails ^^; Using only one combo to switch is much more natural though =/
From the time of the posts (2005), it is not Win7. Despite that, that is pretty much what I did: removing any and all reference to U.S. English in the language settings. In these posts, they also mentioned the source of the issue being that it was still selected for non-unicode programs. In my case, it is not, as I set Japanese for non-unicode ^^;
Gah that’s what I get for writing all the kana, then all the romaji separately ^^; Oh, that just made me think I have to make a thread about what caused this.
It’s true quite often, but not always. 月 (nichi)、日 (getsu)、夕 (seki)、木 (moku)…. Well these kanji probably have other on’yomi “more Chinese sounding” (I know 月 and 日 have much more on’yomi, and it may be the case for the other ones too…?).
So yeah, it is still true most of the time, but you can’t really use that to generalize. Still, if you happen to remember both the on’yomi and kun’yomi for a given kanji, but you forgot which is which, then indeed, many times the more Chinese sounding one will be the on’yomi ^^
I don’t really have ways to distinguish them other than learning the Textfugu way (learning on’yomi with stories, and kun’yomi with vocab).
Oooh that just enlightened me too. Thanks ^^
I’m liking this so far, so I guess I’m a believer…? ^^ (yeah, I wasn’t a big fan of the old forums, so…)
