Past Negative Verbs (ませんでした)
“Things won are done, joy’s soul lies in the doing.” - William Shakespeare
The last verb conjugation that we’re going to learn in this chapter is ませんでした. Conveniently for us, ませんでした is just a combination of ません and でした, which makes it pretty easy to remember.
Since I’m pretty sure you know what’s going on here by now, let’s just jump right into the example:
a 立ちます → To stand
a 立ちません → To not stand
a 立ちました → Stood
a 立ちませんでした → Didn’t stand
This is just as simple as the last three conjugations you learned, and used in exactly the same way.
a すし を たべました
I ate sushi
a すし を たべませんでした
I didn’t eat sushi
Most importantly, though, you should learn how to use it along with everything else. Just remember that ませんでした is the past negative verb conjugation. When you know that, you can move on to the next page.
By finishing this page, you’ve learned ませんでした
