To Like

“I meant to procrastinate today, but I never got around to it.” - Red Green

The English word “to like” and the Japanese word “to like” are a little different. In English, for example, “to like” is considered to be a verb (that’s why the “to” is in there). In Japanese, however, it’s used as an adjective (though in very rare instances you’ll see it as a verb, but it’s so rare we can 80-20 rule it out of here). This makes “to like” a great way to transition into adjectives, which we really dive into a couple chapters from now.

First, though, you have to learn the word for “to like” in Japanese.

a 好き (すき)
To Like

The pronunciation of this, you’ll notice, sounds more like “ski” than “suki.” The “u” sound is deemphasized, almost as though it doesn’t exist (if you listen carefully, though, it’s still there a little).

Now you know the word for “to like” – d’awww. What a nice word to know!
