Time In Weeks

“Time is an illusion.” – Albert Einstein

Weeks! Now we’re getting somewhere. Actually, weeks are incredibly easy… possibly the easiest time-related thing of them all. Think about it:

  • There aren’t really “specific” weeks like there are specific months.
  • There’s no weird exceptions like most of the other time-related things.
  • You mainly just count weeks and talk about future, present, and past weeks, and nothing else.

Anyways, you’ll see.

This Week, Last Week, Next Week

Weeks follow the same rules as months. They are:

  • a 今週(こんしゅう)= This week
  • a 先週(せんしゅう)= Last week
  • a 来週(らいしゅう)= Next week

Compare this to the years, which are 今月, 先月, and 来月. Notice a pattern here? If you learned about these month-words, you should be able to read these words as well.

Before moving on, just be sure that you can remember these three week-words.

Number Of Weeks

The only other thing you have to learn with weeks is talking about the number of weeks. You can probably guess how this is going to work, already.

a 1週間(いっしゅうかん)

a 2週間(にしゅうかん)

a 3週間(さんしゅうかん)

a 4週間(よんしゅうかん)

a 5週間(ごしゅうかん)

Etcetera

There’s no weird exceptions, no weird ヶ, and nothing else you need to know. It’s the number (sometimes shortened, check out the table at the bottom of this guide for more info), 週 (week), and 間 (indicates it’s for a period of time, in this case a certain number of weeks).

Most likely, once you hit anything above three or four weeks you’re going to start talking in months, so really you can get away with only learning the first four 週間s. Anything more is overkill.
