I’m going through the はず practice sheet from Season 5 (here) where one of the example sentences reads:

    この マクドナルド は きれい はず が ない。
I have no expectation that this McDonalds will be clean.

I thought it should look like this:
    この マクドナルド は きれいな はず が ない。

Could somebody clarify which is correct? Thanks.

きれい isn’t an い adjective, it’s a な adjective. な adjectives only need to have な on it when it comes before the noun it’s describing. Therefore the first sentence is correct.

    *Edit*
While you can have “きれいなマクドナルド” It implies the Macdonalds is already clean/It is known to be clean. Which takes away the point of using はず as an expectation.

きれい is a な adj so according to the rules in TF…:
“Let’s start with な adjectives first. They’re similar to nouns, with one difference:

    na-adj + な + はずです
べんりな はずです (expect to be convenient)”

Seems to me like he made a booboo in the practice sheet. It happens. I usually just submit a bounty and move on. Sometimes they get fixed, sometimes not.

On the TF な adjectives list, the 4 that end with an い are きれいな, きらいな, ていねいな, ゆうめいな.

Yeah, there should be a な between きれい and はず. Because きれい(pretty) is a な adjective.

Note that in every example you gave, kanjiman, the い is functioning as a long え – that’s why they’re not い adjectives.

Ah, no, this is true. Didn’t see that one there. =P

きらい is just a stupid exception.

I haven’t reached the lesson on はず yet. I listed the 4 な adjectives that end with an い just as a quick reference. Didn’t mean to confuse anyone if I did :D
