As it may be clear from the title, John’s article on passive learning has inspired me. I am interested to hear suggestions on some artists that would be good for this purpose. Unfortunately being in college in AL i do not have much exposure to Japanese media. I would be greatly appreciative if anyone can point me in the right direction, beyond hatsune miku and yoshida kyoudai. Also if anyone has any suggestions where to find other usable sources, movies drama anything really, that would be great. If its a matter of how much i know in japanese i am in ch7 of genki (te form with iru helping verb) but am only in season two of tofugu, just joined up.

Thanks for any sort of help that can be offered, i am sure i am not the only one who could benefit from this discussion lol. New sources are good for everyone after all.

Hatsune Miku… Vocaloid just doesn’t do it for me. Perhaps it’s because I am a singer/musician myself and just find the whole vocaloid thing repulsive. It’s great that they achieved such a thing but it should never be used to fully replace a singer. But that’s another discussion, lol.

You didn’t list your preferred genre… So not sure what you kind of music you like.

    This song is awesome: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Co8U9ZhrYKw
    And this one too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yM7JubRz46A

Those are actually a few of my favorite Japanese songs I have found during my search for Japanese music. Check out more songs by either artist if you like the above songs I posted.

Lately I have been listening to euro-beat style music. If you like euro-beat and can find the album “Super Anime Remix – Super Best” it has a ton of cool songs on it.
    Stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dqr1MUNQNO8

Also “Toho Euro Flash Vol.1″ and Vol.2 by NJK Record are two albums I really like.
My favorite song off Vol.1 being this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkLNFta-EbQ
and favorite song off Vol.2 being this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7x32wX-BvQ

    Did I mention I love euro-beat??

If your into something more rocky and heavy, I have been enjoying both “Nightmare” and “D”.

As far as my prefered genre of music i mostly listen to more classical esque music, usually hatever i have on my yoshida kyoudai pandora statio. That is created to have as few vocals as possible because i use it to study alot and cant afford to get distracted to often. I also will listen to death metal, and similar genres, but that isnt good for this purpose. The other genre i listen to would be dubstep. I for the most part have abandoned lyrics in most music, got kinda tired of hearing about the sane old thing from the popular music around here (which i have never been into in first place, this means rap r and b etc). I will definately check those links out, thank you both. Would have done so already but i had to sleep sometime lol. Any other suggestions for anything, they r appreciated.

Revise that, i have watched the videos and found them quite enlightening. The first vdeo of D reminded me of my chemistry classes though, i could have sworn it looked just like that.

Wow, no AKB posts yet, something is wrong! :P

I like Do as Infinity, their songs vary but usually it’s kind of alternative mixed with Japanese classical music, or something like that I don’t know.

Couldn’t help but wonder was that an intentional pun or purely incidental? lol

Do As Infinity was good also, thank you. Honestly I am a bit surprised there hasnt been an AKB recommendation yet either. I havent listened to them but based on past articles they r very popular.

lol, I’m not even a regular here and I got that pun.

I’ve never been into AKB48. Honestly, I feel if you like that kind of music/idol group that Morning Musume is a better group (musically). AKB48 is a better idol group but I feel Morning Musume has better singers and music. Since I am not into idol groups and am strictly into the music, I prefer Morning Musume.

This song has some dubstep elements in it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1VVHhHv7zE&feature=related

I’ve been hooked on Yousei Teikoku since the first moment I listened to their music. This is the one I like most:

    Two more:

For something a little calmer; Kanon Wakeshima:

This topic does need some AKB48:

Whether you like their music or not idols do offer a lot of options to practice Japanese, and can be very entertaining. Of course it helps if you like idols. A popular non-music option is AKBingo! I can’t get enough of that show. It’s genuinely entertaining.

The nice thing about idols is they are paid to speak clearly. You can’t beat that when you’re starting out.

Yousei Teikoku is awesome! I will definitely be listening to them a lot in the future.

Yousei teikoku was pretty good. I really enjoyed Kanon Wakeshita, big fan of the classical string instruments.

Hey you were definately right, AKB48 speaks very very clearly. I really appreciate all the comments I have been making a list from this thread so thank you.
