I’m not quite sure about this conjugation: 行ってしまいました

    What’s going on here?

X-て+しまう = either “completely X” or “regrettably, X” depending on context.

So I’d say it’s “I’ve arrived!” or “We’re here!” or similar.

Sorry I rushed it, this is the whole sentence:

    プレゼントをくれた時、そして宇宙人はどこかに行ってしまいました. (From TF)

I’ll have to look into that, haven’t come across it before. I take it the う changes to い sometimes.

    しまう = plain form. しまいます = ます-form

I’m thinking the meaning is “After he gave the present, the alien [regrettably] went away somewhere.”

    Cool, thanks.

TK has a section on it, will look into it.

Interestingly the translation given in TF excludes the nuance of that particular conjugation:

“After he gave me the present he went off somewhere.”

I have to admit, I’m not entirely certain which nuance is in force here. Just think it’d be a little odd to say “he completely went away”.

I assume ‘regrettably’, as it is such a great alien (it gives gifts afterall).

I have encountered something on Lang-8 I do not understand…….. :*( lols XD
*M = Mine *C = Corrector (done so that each sentence lines up… OCD FTW!!!!)
    M: ほとんど毎日Ankiをしてます(毎平日Ankiをしてます。
    C: ほとんど毎日Ankiをしてます(平日は毎日Ankiをしてます。
Why is it 「平日は毎日」? は just seems really weird here to me…
In literal English would this be like “Weekdays are everyday” lols (sounds like the start of some song)…. This confuses me… maybe its simple, I do not know…
Does anyone know whats up with this? Are my は skills not wathy enough? (puniness included, free of charge)

は doesn’t translate directly as “is” – it only seems to do so in XはYです sentences. A better (but rather clunky) translation might be “speaking of X, it’s Y” or “on the subject of X”. In this sentence it’s “speaking of weekdays, I do Anki every day”, or “I do Anki daily on weekdays”.

Incidentally, if you call that OCD, you’re clearly not a computer programmer. Unbalanced brackets cause anguish. =P

Thank you for the quick response…. (are you camping here for the night? lols. jk. maybe.)
Perhaps for solidification, can I post another example sentence, put what I think it means, and then you verify it?
Here we goes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (begin the nihongo games!)
    M: 私のパソコンを安心ます(「Romaji to Kana」、理解くん(rikaikun–chrome(web)app)クロムウエブアープ)。
    C: 私はパソコンを日本語用にカスタマイズしています(「Romaji to Kana」、理解くん(rikaikun–chrome(web)app)クロムウエブアープ)。
Specifically the 「私はパソコン」, would this (the corrected one, “C”) sentence look like ‘Speaking of computers, I personalized it.’… I am very doubtful of my response….. I do not get why I cannot use 「私のパソコン」…. “My computer “…. “(I) customized my computer”….

No, I’m sitting in class being distracted by e-mail notifications. =P

The corrected sentence is “speaking of me, I customised my computer”. 私は not パソコンは. It’s a little weird to omit 私-as-the-subject if 私 is in the sentence anyway – the fact that it’s your computer can be assumed from context.

I’m not a programmer and the sight of unclosed brackets creates ire in me. Close those brackets!
