Welcome to textfugu Haruka!
Very cool to see that you’ve been doing subtitle/translation work.. Always have much respect for those who do that type of stuff (mainly because I’m often at the receiving end!).
And oh yes, even just barely scratching the surface of Japanese will help tremendously. You’ll start noticing oddities and curious things in the language. For example, neko = cat, umi = sea, umineko = seagull (sea cat?!).. Whether “sea cat” is intended, it’s interesting and helps me retain the vocabulary.
Good luck with your studies!
ooo… Japanese fashion… I have to say I’m quite fond of it too.
I was amazed to discover the abundance of accessories for males in Japan last year. It’s almost like all the accessories for males in the US are for bikers and surfers. Yikes! No thanks.
Good luck, and welcome! Can’t wait til I get out of the free section myself :)
Today I’ve covered yet another lesson! I feel like I should have a calendar and stamp pad like in Brain Age. Would be really cool to have a visual of the days I commit and the ones I skip.
@yuki: instead of telling myself “i need to…” i’m now telling myself “i will do a lesson a day”. Much easier than anticipated!
Oh yes, I went and I loved it. :) I’m sure December will result in a similar story.
@hashi: Thanks man, just gotta stay commited! After all, it will only be myself that I let down. And logically, that would make NO sense.
@winterpromise31: Thanks! I went without high or low expectations and really enjoyed it. Quite different, but I didn’t have any awkward clashes with the culture (as long as I kept sarcasm to myself..).

Heheh, I bought Textfugu around the same time and slacked as well.. I bounced around chapter to chapter, but slapped myself and started from the beginning.
Trying to dedicate myself to one lesson a day, and it’s actually not that bad. The lessons are usually pretty straight forward, and keeping a language log really helps.
Welcome, and good luck to ya!
Welcome Jason!
I too am looking to live in Japan after college. A healthy pace in Japanese is nice and recommended. I have slacked and am now paying for it.. Hopefully my independent studies on Textfugu will prepare me for my second and third Japanese classes at college.
What part of Japan did you visit? I’ve been there once before too in Sasebo (Nagasaki).
Oh hey, good idea, I’ll run my “show room picture” script real quick.

Thanks for the awesome offer! Signed up a few days ago– thanks for working out the kink in my registration quickly, Michael. :)
Listening to Skrillex’s new EP, and a track I seemed to have missed, called “Cat Rats”:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvx5QM8nrZAStrange sound, but catchy.
Soon I’ll probably be listening to Rip Slyme’s Good Times/Bad Times greatest hits albums.. Can’t believe I’m only finding out about those now. *doh*
Hah, in that case I’m sure if the app crashed from one too many sides, it’s best to blame my hardware. Using an iPhone 3G (iOS4 capable, but still same specs as iPhone 2G).. I’ve seen a lot of weird things with the more feature rich apps, lol. But, this app is very fluid and runs great. Absolute great quality.
Like you say, it does not max out… At least to the extent of my patience, which was materialized as a 27 sided card (Side1, A, B, C, . . . ). Worked fine, but that many sides is way outside of the range of practicality. I may do some sort of mini review on it soon and put it on youtube, so long as you’re not opposed to it :p .
Code used: FXWLX7LEMXWK
Very cool! Swipe navigation, multi-side cards.. I like it a lot! 3-sided cards is extremely useful as is, but I wonder how many it maxes out at..
Thanks for sharing koichi, and sending my thanks to the creator right now. :)
But of course :).
And actually, since I just got a new paycheck in, I decided to throw $20 down in an effort to solve at least part of the mystery. I decided to go with this game from Play Asia:
http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-9g-49-en-70-3hab.htmlCheapest worthwhile import I’ve found that still happens to be a first party title. Usually US first party games come with those Club Nintendo codes, so this way I’ll be playing it safe (hopefully). If not, apparently this game is hilarious (or at the very least entertaining), so at least it won’t be a complete waste ;).
I’ll give an update when I receive the game (which may take a while, due to economy shipping). Godspeed, Tingle!
I think the intentions for both sides on how to handle twitter is good, but I’m not so sure that either way is necessarily better. I totally agree with you though– We certainly are all different people, and I like keeping who I follow relevant to my interests.
In regards to twitter, the solution I took was to create a separate twitter account as soon as I felt comfortable typing in Japanese. The only things I ever tweet are things related to either Japan or Japanese, or contain written Japanese language. Anyone reading this, please feel free to follow me (@andoryuu3).
But~! I still strongly agree with making use of the dashboard!
It’s a useful tool to reach out to users that you AREN’T following you, or aren’t even on twitter! I highly condone the idea of tagging textfugu when sharing a personal success tip (or similar) with studying Japanese.
It could also be tagged if someone is having trouble with a certain aspect of Japanese. Someone could state their trouble, and if they’re lucky, someone will see it and share how they are overcoming it (or how they overcame it).
Okay, don’t know if anyone even KNOWS about Sasebo (Nagasaki prefecture), but now you have a reason to visit if you find yourself in southern Japan sometime.
LOOK AT IT. MASSIVE.

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/8213/62232427861897498613652.jpgI know– Eating burgers in Japan? A little bit against the grain, right? But if you try one of these Sasebo burgers, you’ll never forget it. This one was from Log Kit, but another good Sasebo burger place is Big Man. Big Man cuts their bacon fresh every day, and every Sasebo burger usually has a fried egg in it– as if it’s a staple to the burger. Cost is between $5 and $7, which is amazing considering the quality and taste.
I’ll put it this way. This December I’m going back and staying in either Kokura or Kagoshima (both in Kyushu), but i will likely dedicate half a day just to eat one of these again. And I’ll probably do it at least five times in my 3 week stay.

@Winter: Thanks! However, my hair isn’t black anymore… Shampoo gradually washed it out and now I have a dark brown. And nice Photoshop skills. CS3? CS4? ;)
@HypnoCrown: Hah, no doubt you also are a NIN fan then. It’s a tribute to the shy, vindictive side of me. It’s a good thing it doesn’t get let out much.
Huzzah, first full size REAL picture? Lol :)
