Every word you’ll ever need to learn to be functional in spoken Japanese:

    どうも
    どうぞ
    すみません

Yeah, the AはBがC is an extremely common structure in Japanese. This is probably going to confuse matters further, but the grammar dictionary’s explanation is “In this construction, C usually expresses something about B, and BがC expresses something about A”. It adds that there’s three main categories where it’s used:

    1. A is human, and BがC expresses A’s physical or mental state – for example, 大人は塩が大好きです
    2. B is part of A, and C expresses something about B which, in turn, expresses something about A – for example, 花子は目がきれいです
    3. B is a member of A, and C expresses something about B – for example, 辞書はウェブスターがいいです

There’s also a page of verbs and adjectives that basically require the AはBがC structure – 好き is one of them.

The dictionary’s full-on grammarese explanation is A = topic (= subject 1), and BがC is the predicate of that subject. Then within that predicate, B = subject 2, and C is the predicate of that subject.

That’s cause most of them aren’t N3 level. And I don’t have to do it from memory.

Is this massive update going to involve fixing the search function? =P

Yeah. I’ll put in my best effort, naturally, but I kinda think this year’s going to be a lost cause. Guess I’ll just accept it and move on – then buy the kanji and vocab study books and start studying for next year earlier.

    Welcome!

Your opening paragraph is a little stilted, but I guess you’ll learn more about sentence flow when you learn more about the language. =) Just one thing: is your major the English language or English literature (which’d be 英文学) or linguistics (which’d be 言語学)? Just seems a little odd to me that someone would be studying English at an American university. =)

A friendly reminder. Try not use 私 that regularly, as it is often implied that you are the subject in your sentences by what you have previously mentioned.

To expand on this a bit, the words 息子 and 娘, for example, already indicate you’re talking about your own children. If you were talking about someone else’s kids, you’d use more formal words.

Yep. Mind you, realised I made a poor choice of words – that should be “should” rather than “can”. The ~ばいい construction basically means “it’d be good if I did X”, or, more fluidly, “should do X”.

    通って行く means “go through”.

That’s the downside of kids’ books: lack of kanji can sometimes obscure meaning. I’m kinda thinking “Where can I go now, I wonder?”

    Context could help…

    Ten days to go.

Unfortunately, the more I study, the more I discover I don’t know yet…

Any time anyone said the word “beginner”, he used to jump in and post the song “Beginner” by AKB48 :D

    Fixed. =P

Well, so long as you’re sorry, that’s ok…

Just… are you actually going to add new content while you’re busy giving it the Windows 8 treatment? And are you going to actually update everything this time? Currently you’ve got a whole lot of confusion from when you updated how you sorted the kanji, but didn’t update half the lesson pages that refer to it…

I reckon TextFugu’s enough for N5, but you’re going to need to practice listening a lot on your own. Maybe N4. I’ve decided to try for N3, personally, but after buying a study guide, I’m starting to think I may have rather overestimated my ability. Oh well…

Anyway, I’ve been studying with an iOS flash card app called Sticky Study, which is quite handy, but you can also buy mounds and mounds of study books. If you’ve got a local Kinokuniya, it’s certainly worth trying there, but even if you don’t, maybe you can order them off the website. http://www.kinokuniya.com
