    Hi o/

This is one of those things that doesn’t have a “correct” way of doing things.

Normally its as you said, you use katakana and get as close to the sounding as possible ( if you want to cheat you can use wikipedia and change to 日本語 )

With regards to the first name / surname thing. Either way is fine i guess, depending on the name most japanese people will be able to tell which is which. I have heard of some confusion though when putting your surname first as it is fairly well known that in the west we use given name – surname so i generally stick with the way it goes in english. ie

    はじめまして!クレイグ・マカラレンと申します。

but yeah its mostly down to preference imo. hope this helps o/

id say the translation is correct. sony, in china, in the month of january will sell a game console is near enough the exact translation of that phrase, which bit are you confused about and is there some context in which the console itself would be more apparent ?

something id recommend if you want speaking practice and youre not afraid of splashing ( a small amount of ) money is italki or japonin, italki is quite cheap and you get some 1 to 1 tutoring over skype, worst part i found getting into speaking was the confidence issue, getting some practice in with some tutoring is a great idea since if its a tutor they generally speak english pretty well and can ease you into the process. you also improve your “real” japanese faster ;p

in saying that tho ive slacked lately and need to spam lessons in the next 8 weeks before i go over :<<<< ( i leave japan like one week before you arrive or id say hi :<< )

My personal thoughts were RTK didnt really teach me anything ( studied it for a bit and got through a few hundred kanji ) sure i could recognize single kanji… couldnt read them though, or even attempt to work out what alot of words meant. While WK may feel slower it lets you expose yourself to real japanese earlier which is always a massive bonus. Either way just my perspective, theres plenty of people that love the rtk method, i just found it to be too long before it had any solid use in practice.

verbs that end in a singular う all have that わ added during conjugation to negative, i read somewhere that they all have an invisible W hence the small っ when converting to て form or past conjugation, though im pretty terrible at verb conjugation so this all might be lies, but yeah seems to just be a rule you’ll need to remember.

Does ぢ ever get used ? Every time ive seen the potential for it it’s just been replaced by じ

Not 100% sure but i think はたらく (働く) is to work, しごとする would be more like to do a job ? You’ll get used to する verbs, its basically just a noun made into a verb by saying “to do XX”

Certain verbs overlap in meaning ( looking at you いる ) the definition comes from context and kanji if youre reading them.

Also, how do you type the ‘dzu’ hiragana in japanese with a normal keyboard.

    just type du

What would you guys think of using RTK anki deck along side wanikani ? Starting to power learn vocab since it appears to be my biggest gap in understanding things but its hard without knowing all the joyo kanji and since im only lvl 8 on WK it will take like ~2 years to learn all the kanji that way..

This might be more appropriate over on the WK forums but thought they might be a bit more biased :x
