I remember it being said before costs would likely go up due to the amount of new content–the new intermediate and advanced levels being included in the same TextFugu replacement program certainly justifies that.

Yeah, the sound mnemonics can be a pretty big stretch. Over at WaniKani there’s a new vocab that’s still killing me; the suggestion is to remember “Okay now!” for おこなう.

I’m also doing both. I’m just skipping the kanji side of TextFugu altogether, since WaniKani basically seems like that budded off and grown into its own thing anyway. Maybe this will be more of a problem later on if a bunch of vocabulary start using kanji I haven’t run into yet on WaniKani, but I guess I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.

I did download the entire radical Anki deck so I could practice them offline and I figured there was no harm in getting acquainted with many of them early.

This will only help find what’s both new and widely popular, but a few times I’ve done something like use the Oricon top singles list as a basis for what to check out. I’ve also seen torrents that will compile an entire such list into a download, though obviously that’s a liiiiittle less legal.

Yeah, similar or more limited in the U.S. A few months ago I looked at all my Blu-rays’ packaging to see which ones had Japanese options, and it was disappointingly few. Not counting the ones that were Japanese in origin, maybe 2%? That’s before I discovered some have it hidden, but no way did I go checking through my entire library for that. Perhaps most surprised to find the option there for Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

I think the only game I’ve got I’m conscious of having the option for is Xenoblade, though I know there are more out there.

Doubly appropriate that one of the reasons I convinced myself it was a good idea to buy the first season TNG Blu-ray was so I could check it out in Japanese. :)

What OS are you using? I’m using Windows 7 and when my language bar is set to Japanese I can additionally switch between hiragana, katakana, and half-width katakana.

Just finished Season 2. Pretty excited to see Season 3 gets into using adjectives and verbs. Things like じゃありません and でした and か are great and kept multiplying the types of sentences I could make, but then I tried to actually write something on lang-8 and couldn’t get much beyond “I am Josh. I am American.” Need some more meat for those sentence bones.

I don’t know if there are any lists for these, but I’ve learned some Blu-rays will have “secret” audio tracks. I guess some menu designers think showing too many options not many people will use will create a bothersome experience, because they’ll sometimes list different language options depending on what menu language your player is set to show. The U.S. release of Star Wars The Clone Wars TV series, for instance, shows options like English Spanish French on the English menu, but set the player itself to show the Japanese menu and the audio options will be Japanese and English.
