Welcome to TextFugu! :D I hope you’ll enjoy your stay \(*w*)/

I understood that chapter as, if you use は, you will talk about something previously unheard of in the conversation, whilst が is used to refer back to something previously mentioned. Does that make sense..? Do I understand the difference at all?! ;; *feels worried*

It seems pretty empty in there… It’s only me in there o.o

Haha, that video was hilarious, thank you! :’D

I’m using Lang-8 already ^^. Only thing I don’t like about it is that sometimes the people correcting change my sentences altogether, to something I can only assume I haven’t gone through yet on TextFugu, which can be a little frustrating. One time, I wrote “俺の名前はジョナスです” and it got corrected to “ジョナスといいます” and I couldn’t understand why or how that even works, but yeah…

Though, are they fine with you just typing a bunch of sentences with the exact same structure but with different nouns/verbs/adjectives? I know that sometimes you won’t get many corrections at all sometimes, if any. I try to help others with their Swedish/English, of course.

I’m alright with the grammar part, though I haven’t looked at it that much. It’s the words themselves are hard to grasp. They’re difficult, some sound similar to each other, with only a kana or two differing sometimes. Learning my first few verbs was the same experience. They take a really long time to differentiate between and get me on the edge to smashing my head in pavement really… (not not really but you know, frustrating as hell). I’m also really good at repeating past mistakes! For example, if I guess ‘x’ on a word that shows up in Anki, I sure as hell will guess the same exact thing the next time it comes up! Sometimes I even go out of my way to look up up the word/kanji on jisho.org, so that I’ll remember that I really struggle with this one when I see it the next time. Despite this, I still do it!! It’s stupid xD

One thing I try to do a lot (outside of TextFugu) is to use the things I’ve learned as much as I can whilst talking Japanese to native speakers. However, TextFugu’s Anki decks doesn’t like showing the kanji for the words I review either, not even on the side or anything, which bothers me because it gives me literally zero chance of recognizing it if I’d happen to read it elsewhere (like when chatting with my Japanese friends).

Learning words individually is far from my strongest method to understanding faster. Feels too abstract I suppose. I need more sentences to work with (wish there was more example sentences on practice pages!). Maybe even some beginner reading/listening comprehension of some sort so I can really nail the very basics, the most common things you hear and such and practice my pronunciation/speaking speed. I’m not too much of a fan of creating my own sentences, at least not when I don’t have a teacher/knowledgeable person to review my sentences. That way, it makes me uncomfortable about doing that… If they were to be incorrect, I would never know! At least never for absolute sure.

I just recently started with Season 4 (with adjectives and stuff) and ugh, it’s going a bit rough, haha! I find it difficult to keep going, in terms of advancing towards more chapters. Just the first chapter is giving me a hard time in grasping what it says and it’s demotivating me to feel stuck like this. Previously I’ve measured my progress by how many chapters I did each week but I haven’t went onto chapter two even and it’s been more than a week now.

My streak is still going however! Been going through my Anki decks since I started studying the language, which is Nov 23 2013, so almost three months now. Though, it’s getting harder to tell myself to “get it over with” each day that passes by. Originally I could easily just go through my Anki decks whenever I came home from school, happened automatically really, but now I just procrastinate til’ I’m just about to head to bed towards the evening. Kind of terrifying to be honest, don’t wanna break my flawless streak!

Don’t know what to do about it to be honest. I wanna keep up so I can one day be able to chat with my Japanese speaking friends! (Can’t rely on Google Translate forever haha). Anyone who has had a similar experience like me who can perhaps give me a helping hand of any sort (advise, tips, something?).
