    Hi Michael *waves*

Yeah, when I signed up to Textfugu the advice was ‘tell everybody’ – the theory being that others can keep you accountable. However, I think for some people this doesn’t always work. For example, ever made a New Year’s Resolution, told everyone, they then nag you “Hey, how’s the …. going?” “Have you … today”, “You really should… right now” etc? If you feel that everyone’s getting on your back about something, you then start to have negative feelings about your goal. You should want to do something for your own sense of satisfaction, not just to get someone off your back.

Koichi sites the TEDx lecture for the change of heart too. I think it’s in the first chapter of season 1 somewhere. I’ve watched it and it makes a lot of sense to me. Horses for courses, I suppose.

I applied for a job at ASDA twice as a student and never even got an interview :’( I’m still bitter about it…!

    Welcome to Textfugu Sophie!

It’s great to have a fellow Brit on here :-D I’m a Northern lass, myself. It sounds like you have a really good attitude to helping yourself, right now. Everyone goes through difficulties in their life and there are times when things get a bit too much. How you deal with it shows your strength of character (although keeping your language learning is a bit tricky, eh?) Hope posting on here has scratched your itch, as it were!

I’m not one to judge people how how they spend there free time. What ever you want to do to relax is your own choice. That said, I reckon that when you find yourself with a bit of additional free time in your life, then it’s a really good opportunity to use that time productively, as YOU are. When you do find yourself looking for a job, it’s going to look so much more impressive on your CV to have in ‘Personal Interests’ that you have an interest in Japan and the language and that you’re actually doing something about it, then the average ‘enjoys computer games, reading, watching movies, etc’. Employers dig language skills!

    Anyway… enjoy Season 2 :-D

    Hi Sam!

Welcome to Textfugu! はじめましてYour motivations seem valid enough, you don’t have to justify yourself, you know! :P

I’m also from the UK, up in the other corner – Liverpool. Where are you? And how come you get so many Japanese tourists? In Liverpool even the Japanese restaurants are run by Chinese or Taiwanese staff as they think Scousers won’t notice…. I tried to speak Japanese in my local noodle bar the other day, to be told in a very Northern English accent ‘that none of us here speak Japanese, love!’ Ho hum, will have to try somewhere else then!

Anyway, Have you tried watching ‘Ninja Warrior’, it’s awesome. I even picked up a bit of conversation the other day as the contestants speak quite politely. And Brian Blessed is a god. It is indeed a very crazy show!

    Good luck with your studies!

    Hello Rachel,

Welcome to Textfugu. It’s lovely to meet you and hope you can make the most of your studies with this site.

I wonder… have you not tried to learn Hebrew whilst in Israel? What with their weird alphabet and back-to-front books, it’s kinda as quirky as Japanese!

I too, want to work in Japan and am hoping to get a Working Holiday Visa at the end of the year. So… if you’re going to learn AT LEAST one language in your lifetime, what others would you like to learn?

Hi Anna, Welcome to the new forum!

Don’t worry your English is very good, a couple of mistakes but they’re probably only typos. I have had trouble too, keeping motivated over the last couple of years… I would learn Japanese regularly for a while, then not study for months and have to re-learn the stuff I’d already studied! :( That was then, and this is now. Don’t worry if your motivation is low sometimes, it happens with EVERYONE occassionally.

    Good luck with your studies!

    Welcome to Textfugu, Andrea.

Nice to meet you. Cool reason for wanting to learn the language. Have you had chance to go back to Japan since you were a fetus?!

    Welcome (back) to Textfugu!

Yeah, I so wish I was a full time student again… I spend so much time at work that I feel could be spent more productively at home doing something more interesting ;P Try slotting just 10 or 15mins a day in if you’re busy. That’s what I do now and studying Japanese is more of a habit than anything.

Good luck with your studies ^_^

Ahhh… thank you for the tips. My friend says I should start fast and get some good splits for the first few miles, then relax. I prefer your advice… I don’t fancy being knackered from the start ;) When is your last?

Well, hope your training and your studies go well.

    Welcome, Chedkid!

You’re probably picking up on the fact that we would ALL like to have had a similiar experience to you. It’s awesome that you’ve had an opportunity to stay with a host family. I think they would be overjoyed to have you go back and be able to thank them yourself. Thanks for sharing your experience.

    Good luck with your studies!

@Winter – I get that too… it’s like my brain only operates in ‘English’ mode or ‘Non-English’ mode. I work in a Spanish restaurant and sometimes when it is very busy and someone talks to me in Spanish, I end up replying in Japanese (much to everyone’s amusement)It only happens when my minds preoccupied :-Z I don’t know how anyone copes learning multiple languages at one time… any tips, either of you?

    Hi Aaron,

Welcome to Textfugu! Yeah, I should be studying too but thought I’d come and say ‘hi’ first. I second what the other guys said… what’s your motivation for learning Japanese? Do share :) Good luck with your studies!

    Hi Marvin,

Welcome to Textfugu! I’ve had an a bit of an on-off relationship with Japanese but have finally settled into a steady rhythm with this site… hope you do too.

So, are you learning Japanese AND Korean at the moment? You must be busy! Good motivation though. I’m still a beginner but if I can do anything to help, I will try ;)

    Take it easy,
    Emma ^_^

    Welcome, Lizbet!

Ha ha, everybody has pounced on you and are already asking a million questions, so I’ll keep this short…

Good luck with you Japanese studies.

Don’t be shy, everyone I’ve met here so far are very nice… although I haven’t met everybody! ;P
