I’m trying to make some sentences to help me remember the nouny adverbs from season 4 that I will add to anki.

I’ve come up with this for “very”

あの　は　とても　たかい　たてもの　です

That is a very tall building

but when I put it into google translate to get an audio version the translation is coming back with “he is a very tall building” unless I take out the は and it becomes “it is that very tall building”.

Am I the one getting it wrong or is it google?

If you want to keep the same words in the sentence, and want to get that meaning, you will have to write it like this since

あの建物はとても高いです

You could also keep the same sentence structure and go with this:

あれはとても高い建物です

Thanks マーク, so you would only use  この /その / あの  when the noun is before the adjective?  I’ve just gone back to the relevant textfugu page and there isn’t an example showing it the way I did so I guess I was making things up myself.

No, you use この/その/あの when the この et al is before the noun – it’s called the pre-nominal form. これ/それ/あれ is the pronoun form, and it’s what you need to use if it’s standing alone.

Just as a side note, In this case you actually made a mistake but don’t trust google translate too much. It’s okay for very simple sentences but once you get to more complicated grammar it gives some pretty bad translations.

Agreed. Google translate is fine for single words or very simple sentences and phrases but anything more complex and it isn’t worth using it. Which is probably why one of the reasons Lang-8 was created.

I’m the youngest in my family with three older brothers. When talking about them, how should I refer to each of them?

Not sure how common [name]-お兄さん is outside of anime, but that’s one idea. Alternately, if you want to specify them without naming them:

一番上 = oldest

上から二番目 = second oldest

上から三番目 = third oldest

(or possibly 下から二番目 = second youngest)
