Let’s cast some thread necromancy!
Here are the things I wrote about my trip to Japan in 2012. It’s on tumblr so you’d have to dig through several pages of My Little Pony content to find it, thus I’ll link the posts here directly :3

Oh, I’ll go ahead and link last time’s blog entries there :D
Looked over your storybook as well, so much content! Makes me nostalgic and also enforces the impression that even though we went there for 3 weeks, we didn’t see nearly as many great things as we could’ve.Some days late, but I just stumbled across your introduction (my endless love for puns made me click) and I just wanna say “Welcome” and thank you for this very entertaining read. You come across like a really likeable person and I wish you all the best for your progress with TextFugu :3
Welcome, Tamara!
Your reasons for learning japanese sound very inspiring, I wish you all the best for this linguistic voyage.
I’m a newbie myself (mid-Season 2 right now) but I can highly recommend Aikibujin’s guide for setting up Anki (linked above) and also to basically immerse yourself in Japanese content as much as possible while working your way through TextFugu.
I, for example, am watching a lot of Anime recently which obviously have English subtitles, but instead of just reading those I try to recognize as much as possible in what is being spoken. Often it’s just a single word, sometimes a partial sentence, but this creates a very strong motivational effect for me. I feel like I am actually starting to learn the language. I also frequently visit Japanese websites and just try to read anything I can. I try to recognize as many Kanji as possible and attempt to guess what e.g. a link leads to before clicking on it.
It’s a really rewarding experience which motivates me greatly to learn on.Maybe this is a personal quirk of mine but it might help you too. Augment the learning material TextFugu provides with the films and books you like and just try to really “get in there” :)
Thank you VERY much for your help! This should be sufficient to order the sim card.
I can also highly recommend this option for anyone going to Japan for a short-ish time. b-mobile offers a “visitor sim” but that’s limited to 14 days which might be too short for most people. This one I’m trying to buy is good for 30 days and the coverage for mobile internet is really really good in Japan. Note: You’ll need a Japanese cell phone to activate this sim. Last time, we rented a phone from our hotel (for 1 hour basically) and called the activation hotline, after that the sim can be inserted in any compatible device.
To answer your question: it’ll be my second holiday trip to Japan. My boyfriend and I went there in September 2012 and we enjoyed it a lot, so this year we’re going again (with one week in Hong Kong prior to spending 3 weeks in Japan). We’ll be staying in Tokyo, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Kyoto and Osaka.
I was actually planning to blog about it, and I can surely post the entries here for anyone who’s interested :)You should check out memrise. They offer several collections of vocabulary, both single words and helpful sentences. Many of these are kanji-free, too.
Beware though, there is no guarantee as to how correct everything is. But it certainly is a good resource :)
Here’s one for food vocab, and generally everything Japanese you can find here. -
